Help with EQ & Vista

I think most of the frustrations I have had with Vista, I have just learned to live with, so I don't really think about it anymore. That's not necessarily a good solution, but because I didn't know how to work around things, that's how I coped. DH signed up for a Vista class at the local Adult Ed & after 2 classes, didn't go back. There were too many students in the class that were completely computer illiterate, so a lot of time was taken up on very, very basic issues - he wasn't sure if they were ever going to actually teach about Vista:(

Yes, EQ6 runs on Vista. I know that because in order to upgrade from EQ5 to EQ6 I had to get a new computer. (I needed a kick to replace the old computer, purchased in 1998, which used Windows 98. The new computer, purchased in 2008, runs Vista.)

I've had EQ since v4, which I bought new-in-box from a friend who had two copies. I upgraded to v5 and now to v6. I keep up with the upgrades because they are fairly inexpensive. All told I've used it to design maybe a dozen quilts....One Of These Days I'm really going to learn to use it.

My dear Hubby bought me a new laptop for Christmas... and gave it to me early so I could start playing with it... and begin installing all the gazillion things you need to do to personalize your computer.

A couple of question...

EQ -- does it run on Vista? I have 5 on my old laptop... and I have 6 somewhere. I did have it installed on my old laptop -- then it crashed and I couldn't find the disk for 6 so haven't worried about it.

I also have Embird on my old laptop -- but since I still haven't tackled my embroidery machine for anything but piecing... this isn't such a big deal.

Those of you already into Vista... anything you would suggest to make things less frustrating?

I'm also going to be installing Office 2007... so I will really be pulling my hair out... as I am an above average user of Office and now will need to learn a whole new set of menus (ribbons???) and stuff... OH BOY!!!

And then I will have to figure out how to sync my iPhone with my new machine... I'm so exicted!

My gift --- while I'm very appreciative.... is going to monopolize far too much time relearning things that I had begun to feel competent with... Oh well... live and LEARN!

that's not an option -- as it would void the warranty on the system -- which is good for a year. After that I could consider that -- but not about to right now. If I were to switch back -- I could kiss support goodbye for any other issues.

Nann, I challenge you in 2009 to master EQ6. It will really save you time. I still haven't upgraded from EQ5 because I haven't had the time to learn the newer version. Even when using a pattern from a book I draw the quilt in EQ before starting. It just makes the project go faster in the long run.

I second the challenge! I upgraded from 5 to 6 - not really that much to learn, but it has a couple of new tools that I really love when drawing appliqué blocks! I use EQ a lot - designing my own quilts, copying patterns from magazines, etc. For my quilt group in Florida, I plan projects, then write out all the instructions. I import block and quilt pics from EQ into Word as well. The newer version is a bit better at estimating fabric, but still not perfect! One member of my group is a fairly new quilter. She found a block on the net and wanted to make a quilt using the block. I drew the block in EQ, layed out the quilt, then she came over and played with colours until she loved the look. I printed out a picture of the quilt and the block for her to take shopping. She really appreciated the help choosing fabric colours - a difficult decision for a new quilter.

I have found EQ to be a good way to "hook" the next generation on quilting. When the wives of my son's friends are over they express an interest in my quilting but have never sewn. I introduce them to planning a quilt on the computer and two of them have become real fabric quilters. I don't know if they would have started with fabric but they are so comfortable with the computer that they just jump right in with EQ. While the "boys" play computer games "us girls" sew. Since I never had daughters this is as close as I will get. Someday I hope to have a daughter-in-law or two but am not holding my breath.
