OT--beats the heck outta me

lets see if i got this right or not. not that it matters much. either way, i'm posting to test after being offline with stupid puter that would not boot up for a week. i gave it three or four days by itself, after the initial rebooting trys. then try'd it again for a whole day. then dh asked me when i was gonna let him take it to a technician to figure out cuz ds will need it when uni holidays end and he is back in classes again. well today i tried removing the oldest harddrive, moveing newest into that spot, adding a totally new h/d, reinstalling windows, setting up modem, calling isp, waiting damn near an hour over 3 different calls just to get the right number to put into the modem setup so i could get online and finally i'm here. now to download all the winXP updates yet again, AVG again, various other programs again, checking email, ngs, yahoo groups etc etc etc ad naseum. then i'm taking a long nap, a few days at least cuz this is all a right pita to say the least. oh well. fwiw, j. sorry to bother ya folks! back to your usual postings.

Good grief. I never would have survived all of that. Congratulations, Jeanne, on a horrendous job well done. There's just no telling how much money you saved by getting it done yourself. I am truly impressed. I'll hoist one for you. Probably warm milk but that's just how we old folks celebrate. Polly

I feel your pain! Today my laptoop goes to work with me so my IT guys can put a new hard drive into it. It was working great and then one day, the HD decided not to boot up. No noise, whirring, nadda, zilch. Of course, I had not done the latest backup and using this laptop to store my pictures, I was concerned that I would lose my pix from my latest trip. I think I have everything in other places so it is what it is.

My new HD just arrived yesterday so hopefully tonight I will have a fully restored laptop. The guys put a temporary HD into the laptop for me so I would at least have internet and newsgroup access and could get my email. They will install all my Office programs and my Windows Media stuff. Didn't have too much other stuff on this computer except for pictures. I just need to figure out how to restore the iTunes stuff I purchased for my iTouch. I use my laptop to sync my iTouch with TV shows and movies. I don't normally buy a lot but I don't want to lose what I already have on my iTouch.

Best advice I can share from this experience is backup, backup, backup!

Jeanne - Good for you! I would have just been at the store buying a new one. I'm such a dinasaur - I really mis DOS. I think I'm still running Windows 98 on 'my' computer. DH's laptop is Vista. Everyone I know w/Vista hates it. I constantly get calls from all of our friends to come help/fix their Vista issues. Don't know why the programmers have to hide things and move them.

Well, I'm such a 'blonde' with computers the only real difference I see with Vista is the circle instead of an hourglass! I guess I'm easy to please.... or just a dumb blonde who is oblivious to the obvious! LOL
