EQ6

I just updated to eq6, and wanted to let everyone know that the recent negative post about it is incorrect. My package came with a paper specifically stating ..."You can uninstall and reinstall over and over on the same computer to different drives, partitions, or under diggerent user profiles each time without using a new activation." "The purchase of EQ6 includes 4 activations, which means 4 computers (unless you reformat drives or upgrade Windows). These 4 activiations are intended to last for the life of your software. We stongly suggest that you install EQ6 on one computer and save the remaining 3 activation for future computers or for possible computer failure."

so what I understand from this is that my new software will last forever since "New activations are used when you:

  1. install and activate on a different computer
  2. reformat the drive on which windows is installed
  3. reinstall windows using a different windows product key"

Anyone out there ever find themselves in that position?

In this group and in others, there seem to be a number of people who reformat their drives frequently. Don't know why.

Haven't worked daily in the computer world for a few years now. Used to set up computers and servers, run a lab for developers, and conduct a class for Novell admins. I don't recall doing a lot of reformatting of hard drives even under those circumstances.

Maybe that's something that has to be done with today's modern computers? Or homemade computers?

I'm from the same school of thought, Kay ... I've only reformatted my drive (on my PC - my Mac? never!!) once - and that one time was only because I didn't have the patience to deal with the *twelve* trojans & viruses that my kids managed to download on their gaming sites.

My tack is to set a restore point ... and then leave it at that. :)

Now, I *have* replaced drives - but I've always managed to do that before losing the drive completely ... I just made an image of the drive and copied it to the new one. Then made the new one the master ...

FWIW, for those of you thinkin' about buying a Mac, I've never had a day's trouble with it (knocking on wood - I'm superstitious!) ... no problems with viruses, OS instability ... you name it! Now, if EQ will just come out with a version for the Mac, I'll bet that complaints about the 4 activations would cease! At least, for the most part!! :)

Hugs!

When I had Windows ME was when I had to reformat my hard drive frequently. Windows 98 was even worse. Now that I have Windows XP I have not had to reformat in 4 years. Very nice!

DH and I have had 6 computers, and have never reformatted a hard drive. I do backups on a fairly regular basis so even if I have a crash, I do have a relatively new backup. The restore point is probably a better way to do it. I was having some computer problems a few months ago, and we asked our computer tech if my hard drive should be reformatted. DH & I were wanting to wait a few months before we bought new computers, and we thought this might help. He said he wasn't a big believer in that, and that it usually just creates even worse problems down the road. He said you are just taking a chance that the programs you reinstall are going to have problems and cause problems. There have been so many negative posts about EQ6 on this topic. Most people on other forums that have computer problems say that EQ6 will work with you on this.

The part that I thought is strange is when EQ6 is installed as an upgrade. If, knock on wood, I have to reinstall EQ6 I would FIRST have to install EQ5. Which was also an upgrade from EQ4......sure hope I wouldn't have to go back that far 'cause I sure don't know where THOSE installation discs are. LOL

Nah, rest assured, it doesn't work that way. EQ6 is a stand alone application. The word upgrade refers to the price they give former users. I upgraded from 4 to 5, then got rid of 4. When I got my new computer - no problems.

EQ5 is a stand alone program (as are all the previous ones). If you bought EQ6 as an upgrade, then you must also have EQ5 installed. If you bought EQ6 as a stand alone then nothing else must be installed. No need to go back further then EQ5.

However, you do need to have EQ5 installed in order to install/activate the EQ6 upgrade. But previous versions have been stand alones. I think that too many people were selling off the previous versions, which meant lots of new owners who really back logged the customer service people. I can understand why they are doing it this way. And DH says that for what you get, and the price of the program it is more than worth it. The value is tremendous for the price.

I don't know how it might work going from EQ4 to EQ6. If you are interested in making that purchase, contact them at snipped-for-privacy@electricquilt.com to inquire.

I wonder what they'll do for EQ7 upgrades if they continue with their new system? .....cause at some point it's going to get way crazy keeping back copies. Allison

FWIW - I love EQ, but I was not at all happy with the way the EQ6 release was managed. There was no information for a long time on how future activations would be handled, and not much more now that "trust us, we'll look after you". I would rather pay for a program protected by a dongle requirement.

But that aside, what happens if people start upgrading to a new operating system that does not support EQ5 (bound to happen sooner or later) and then they want to install their upgrade to EQ6? There was quite a lag between EQ5 and EQ6, so if the time to EQ7 is similar this has got to be a possibility.

I have already had a bit of trouble getting EQ4 to run properly with VISTA (finished up getting rid of VISTA and reverting to XP, but that can't last forever), so if I tried to upgrade from EQ4 to EQ6 with the next gen op sys I am assuming that the problems would be worse.

I'm pretty sure I went from 4 to 6 without 5, but I don't have the earlier disks any more.
