Brother Pacesetter 8200 with PE-V1.1

I purchased by Brother Pacesetter new from a local Brother dealer (who has a monopoly in our area) three years ago. Not knowing anything about embroidery machines except that I wanted one. He sold me his floor model with the PE-Design V 1.1 for just under $4,000. After I found out that there are other versions available, he told me to just get an upgrade for the V 1.1. I told him the V 1.1 cannot be upgraded. He insisted it can be. Now I am thinking about purchasing a 2, 3, 4, or 5 version, but I don't know what the advantages are to each version. Needless to say, I will NOT purchase from my local dealer. By the way, I took my Brother in for a check-up before my warranty period was up to make sure everything was in tip top shape. I noticed the carrying case was all scratched and for no reason at all I checked the serial number on the back of my machine. It was NOT my machine that was returned to me. When I told him about the switch, he said he couldn't do anything about it as his computer crashed and can't get an information about whose machine is whose. I get upset everytime I think about it. =20

WOW what a weasel!! If I were you I would call the Better Business Bureau and the police. Computers crashing is no excuse for giving you back something different than you brought in. Could hospitals get away with this? (Sorry, we lost you child, but this one is nice). If this person has half a brain he/she can figure out which one is yours, even if it means calling people and comparing serial numbers. You were very smart to check your serial number before and after servicing. Please share with us where and who you had this experience, to avoid anyone else from such crappy service. I think the scariest part of having such a hugh investment in a machine is having to trust your dealer/service center.

FYI - you can upgrade from V1.1 to 5.0 by buying the upgrade version of V5.0 - the upgrade comes with new box, card etc - all you need.

As to your machine - maybe Brother International can be of some assistance to you. Did you register your machine when you bought it? You should report the switch to Brother itself, along with your documentation regarding the other and your serial numbers. If the one you got back was also registered, they may be able to assist you in getting yours back, and at the very least, your local Brother dealer's practices and not caring need to be reported to the regional representative for Brother.

Weasel is too nice a word. When I bought my SM I got a seperate paper with the serial numbers on them. I also wrote them in the manual just in case. My other question is, Did you ever have it serviced before and did you keep the paperwork from that? the number might be on there. That really makes my blood boil. I would fill out a police report for a theft. JMHO Linda

I'm with Linda. This isn't some rental they exchanged without your consent. It's a very expensive PURCHASE. Your machine was not returned to you. If it was an accident, that's inexcusable, and if it wasn't (if someone is playing you for a patsy and trying to stick you with a known lemon or a model that's been run into the ground) that's criminal.

Once Sears lost a lawnmower my father had taken in for service. They didn't offer him a beat-up model in exchange; they apologized and offered him his pick of the new, comparable models. I'm not a big fan of Sears in general, but that was the right way to handle such accidents when they happen.

What you're describing is all wrong. You're not at fault here, and I wouldn't think twice about offending anyone who was trying to take advantage of my generally good nature by pulling a fast one on me. I suggest you demand your own machine back within X days, in good condition, and if you don't receive it, you will report them to the Better Business Authority (or suitable group for your country, if not USA). Don't be surprised if that group recommends you call the police. It was theft.

Make that, "Better Business Bureau."

I do have my original machine's serial number on my paperwork, but it is not the same serial number that is on the back of the machine I now have. This machine has been working fine ever since it was given (switched) to me. I guess as long as it works I don't have much to complain about. But I wish I had been knowledgeable about the PE-Design. He sold me the V1.1 when the others were available. If I would have known what I know now, I would never have gotten anything under a V3 even though I don't know what the advantages are. Thank you, Liz, and to the others who cared enough to respond.

Well I am sorry I would be most unhappy to get someone elses machine. Check the serial number with the manufacturer and see how old the substitute machine is in case it is older. The version 1 software is now very old and we are on V5 - each time there is an update you can do more with it. It is easy to upgrade onto the latest version if you have 1 already, but the V5 has a new box and 4 meg card. I would confront your dealer and tell him you are very disappointed you got someone elses machine, and make a subtle comment about the very first version of the software he sold you. Don't shout and ball keep controlled and spell out your dis-satisfaction with the whole episode. Liz
