ARRRRRGH!!!! Trying to sew ONE block!

So, I also peruse a men's quilting group on Yahoo. One of the members very suddenly passed away two weeks ago at the age of 41. What is known as a HUG quilt on RCTQ was proposed for his partner. So, the members were divided up by region of the country to make a block according to the Rainbow flag. Lucky me, I got purple.



Anyways, I found a pattern for an 8" block and cut my pieces perfectly, sewed a scant 1/4' seam, pressed and didn't iron, and the unfinished size came out 8 1/4". So I redid the block with the pieces about 1/4" bigger. This time I got a block 9 1/4". So I cut the squares a generous 2 1/2", not even 2 5/8" and this time I got a block a generous 8 1/2" that I could cut down a bit and it will work. I measured my finished seams, exactly 1/4", checked my needle to the line-up-line, 1/4". What should have taken a half hour took almost two!



So, what am I doing wrong? Haven't had this trouble before.

Situation Normal, Steven. A hug block that you could do blindfolded 3 miles uphill both ways always takes 2 hours longer when it's for a hug. Some blocks aren't very important; hug blocks are. I think it's putting in the love. Polly

The design is called Norther Lights, basically a 4 by 4 with four of the blocks HSTs. So, no I can't cut it down without losing the design. That's okay though. It's purple and I like the color so I will use it somewhere, somehow. I got it from Marcia Hohn's site.

I modified it since the puter-togetherer of the quilit basically said purple with white to be able to sign somewhere. What is white on the pattern page stayed white except the HSTs and I varied the purple to two colors.

I'm still confounded though since the time of my jump from my Singer to my Viking vastly improved my piecing and accuracy and this time it all went kaflouey. Oh well.

When mom started chemo I finished up a lap quilt I had in the works. I swear I did more ripping and crying on that quilt than any other

Steve: A lesson learned in a recent group project: fabric that is thicker (a bit more bulk) will result in a chubbier fold, causing the discrepancy in the unit. BTW: That is a pretty block. PAT
