my favorite thing

I just washed and half way dried a little quilt. Patted it out on the kitchen counter and loved it a little while. I think that's called blocking and it did receive a tug or two. And a prayer for God to bless the little one who will be hugged in it - or will chew it - or leak pureed spinach. Sometimes the steps in quilting challenge me; sometimes they defy me - but the patting time is my favorite. What's yours? Polly

My favorite bit is when I take a quilt out of the dryer after washing it the first time. The batting has shrunk just a bit and I love seeing that 'puffed out' look for the first time.

The surprise look (is this for me?) on their face and the joy I get from giving.

I love that moment too, when you can see that it survived the machine wash and developed the right texture and nothing ran, so you give it a touch of love. But I love even more the moment when all the bits go up on the design wall and I suddenly realize how it all has to go together. Sometimes that moment is a long time coming.

I really enjoy picking out the fabrics for any of the projects I decide to sew, even if it is just a simple solid color baby blanket, or a piece of clothing. And I love to cut and sew it. But I guess my favorite is when I present the gift and they love it as much as I do and I know it will be used and washed and used some more. Barbara in SC

oh, gosh, that just made me tear up. There are warm fuzzy feelings at several steps of the process, from deciding what to do/colors focus/fabric auditions, to sewing it all together [and seeing a mind's-eye project coming together], to the quilting/tying, to the satisfaction of the completed project.

The most humbling is as others have noted, the looks of wonder and excitement and happiness from the recipient. For me, the process of creating is a gift to myself, and I simply must get back to that.

My favorite time is the imaging time. Picturing a baby snuggling in the quilt, or maybe drooling on it ;-) Bonnie NJ

I like trying new things so my favorite part of quilting is making the first few blocks to judge how my idea will work. Problem is that I too often stop when I know the idea will work. Is it a UFO if it was an experiment in the first place?
