Bisou is in the doghouse (not entirely OT)

I had a dental appointment today, which will lead to several more in the coming months. I came home to find that Bisou had -- for the very first time ever -- dragged the quilt off of the back of the chair in the living room. That was bad enough, but she also chewed a hole right through the middle. :O It's this one: . Bisou has never heard me quite so angry with her before. I don't think there's any way to rescue the quilt, but DH says he'll still use it on his cot at his fishing place (he shares with three other guys) in Mexico. All I can say is that it's a good thing it wasn't my very favorite quilt!

What do you think? Was Bisou punishing me for cutting off all of her long hair and leaving her looking cute and cool?

Back to packing for camp now ....

Ouch!

One of my quilty girlfriends had a similar event occur, but the quilt in question was a gift for a nephew. Amazingly enough, we were able to dequilt a bit around the hole, make replacement blocks, piece in new batting and backing, and requilt, all in just a week. (There were six of us who came to the rescue.)

There is hope. :)

(My spell check wanted to change "dequilt" to "tequila". That might help, too! ROFLOL)

I would applique a patch of some sort on each side of the quilt over the so the hole is covered and the edges protected from more damage during usage, washing, etc. For the patch on the back, you could embroider the date, the reason for the patch, and the name of the guilty critter.

Sorry to hear about your quilt! Have a great time at camp.....

Or maybe bind off the hole and make it into a tree skirt. :-)

Have you got any of that purple floral fabric left in your stash? A piece of batting, two pieces of the floral appliqued over the back and front would make it a whole quilt again, though it would probably be noticeable since the damage is probably on a pieced block. If it is just one block, applique to cover the whole block for a better looking result.

If Bisou is a cat the answer is yes. If Bisou is a dog, then the quilt smelled tasty. Debra in VA See my quilts at:

Sandy, Iperhaps you are right - she was protesting the hair cut! Or, perhaps she finally realizes how comfy they are and wants one to sleep on - and choose this one :)

After her precious self, the quilt is the thing you spend time with, cuddle up with, and handle the most. The quilt has your scent on it. No wonder she valued it so much that she wanted to mouth it when she was lonely. (On another usenet group, a guy's dog kept munching on television remotes. We had to explain that dogs love what people handle and fondle.) It's time to lock up all quilts out of your dog's reach.

My dog used to pull all my fabric off the shelves and sleep on it. He didn't stop until I made him his own quilt.

It is all your fault. Probably Bisou sensed your anxiety about the dental appointment and thought maybe you were going off to something awful like being neutered - and were Never Coming Back. Polly

Thanks for all of the suggestions -- this group comes up with some awfully good ones. I think my favorite is Kathy's tequila! But the block she destroyed is an appliquéed one from someone in the group that had the swap (my local group a few years ago). She ate the center out of the turquoise heart -- maybe a photo of the front of her and the back of her, as Jennell suggested would be the best idea. LOL! I know I don't have any of the fabrics from the back or sashings any longer.

LOL! I'd love that explanation, except that I didn't have any anxiety about getting my teeth cleaned. Besides, she's dragged it to the floor twice more since I came home! I left it out thinking I'd use it as a teaching tool: "LEAVE IT, BISOU!!!!!!!!!" ;)

there must be some kind of new scent on the quilt for her to do that. usually things left around and people scented dont get chewed here at my house. although, it has been known that a "trinket" or two have been left on the carpet when Crikit is left too long.....i'd rather have the hole in the quilt!!

i like the picture on each side solution!!

I'd go with the applique of Bisou front/back as well. You can just never tell w/QI's. One reason I don't have a quilt on my bed. Both of our labs sleep in bed w/us. Between scritching and scratching and sniffing and licking, it would just never last. I can't see putting that much work into something to have them 'love it' to death in a few months. We keep talk about teaching the next one to sleep on the floor. Don't see that happening unless both go at the same time and we train a solo differently and not much chance of that happening with the age differences we have here (4 YO vs. 14 YO).

So sorry about the quilt, Sandy! I, too, have had a dog eat a hole in a quilt. In our case, it was simply boredom. So I can't imagine what got into Bisou. Fear of being left alone, perhaps. Can you crate her during the times you will be gone? If she likes her crate, it can prevent a lot of that kind of behavior--in my experience, of course, YMMV.

The replacement to my former practically-perfect dog proved she was not in the same practically-perfect category when she did the same thing to the rag quilt I keep on the couch.

Fortunately, I have some extra fabric scraps and I think I can piece together something to cover the hole. It won't look the same, but it will be washable and will wear ok.

I felt like growling at her big-time when I saw it, but it was so long after the act that I'm sure she'd have had no idea what I was angry about.
