Not OT: visit to a doctor and OT: QI injured

The bad news first. My little "baby" Bisou has injured herself somehow

-- probably from flying around the house or the yard the way she loves to do. Her back is now very painful, to the point where she cries a

*lot* when she never used to even squeak if we accidentally stepped on her toe. Poor little thing! I had her to the vet today, and he's put her on prednisone, pain killers and total rest. She can't even go outside by herself; I must leash her and escort her to make sure she doesn't overdo. I realize that her condition isn't as serious as some of our members' conditions, but I'd appreciate it if you could think some good thoughts for her.

Now for the good news. I had an appointment with my eye doctor today -- the first since I'd finished the dragon quilt I'd made for her. I explained to her that I'd started making it before she'd decided to redecorate with angels, and her first comment was that everyone said that she wasn't very angelic and that dragons suited her better, so she was keeping the dragons. :) Then she unwrapped the little quilt I'd made for her. You know how some quilty gifts are politely accepted, and we wonder if they'll ever be used? You also know how other quilty gifts are treasured and exclaimed over? Well, this one fell in the latter category! :D My doctor couldn't get over the fact that I'd been thinking of her outside of my appointments; she couldn't get over how much work had to have gone into the making of this little piece; she immediately recognized the eye as being a garnet; she ran around her offices trying to decide where best to hang it so that she and her patients could enjoy it without leaving it vulnerable to too many small hands; she hugged me several times. I think I can be very certain that it was a success! :D I did tell her that it was washable, and she was horrified -- she said she'd never wash it, for fear of it fading. LOL! I did tell her that dry cleaning wasn't recommended, so she's decided that rare, *hand* washing is all that will suffice. I'm just thrilled about the whole thing. :D

I really needed that good news to sustain me through Bisou's painful ordeal.

Sandy,

Gentle hugs and pats for Bisou from Mishka, Monty, Cami my cats and Winston & Indy my dogs.

How wonderful that your Dr. loved the quilt. It is a real buzz when the receiver shows how much they appreciate the gift.

Did you put a picture on your website?, I would love to see it.

Hi Sandy, I completely understand! Back in December, my QI hurt his neck and put on meds for 3 weeks, then the pain came back and back on the meds for another 3 weeks. He finished the pills 11 weeks ago and has had no problem since. We don't know for sure what the problem was. To know that, we would have to do an MRI. And at a cost of $2500.00, we wanted to wait to do that in case the meds didn't work. Thank goodness they did!!! The hardest thing will be keep her quiet. After the pain goes away, she'll be back to normal. They seem to forgot the pain very quickly. Good Luck!!!

Thanks, Kate. :) And Bisou is doing a lot of sleeping this morning -- the pain meds are wiping her out. Whew!

Thanks, Jill. I'm dreading trying to keep her quiet as she improves -- she's such an active little thing that she really does want to be bouncing already.

Thanks, Pat. Bisou has been on the muscle relaxers and pain meds since yesterday, and she already wants to do more than is allowed. Thank heavens the pain meds also make her want to sleep a lot.

And yes -- it was truly wonderful to see my doctor's reaction to that quilt! :D It was so much more than I'd expected!

Thanks for the hugs and pats, Mishka, Monty, Cami, Winston and Indy! Bisou will appreciate them as soon as she wakes up. ;)

I did put a photo of the quilt up at . And you're right about that buzz -- it really did make me feel wonderful. :)

How could she not love it - I saw the picture when you posted it and was very impressed.

Just keep that dog calm for a couple of days. That prednisone will kick in and she will want to move about quickly but make her keep it down a little.

I was thinking didn't Jill just go through this? Hopefully Bisou will be cooperative and feeling better soon. When Georgia had knee surgery and had to be absolutely still for 6 weeks I gained 10 lbs. sitting with her. They gave us pills to keep her somewhat sedate and that helped a ton. She was pretty high energy at that point. I was really glad she had been to training classes. That she was obedient and used to a crate made things a lot easier for her and us. I love the story about the dragon quilt giving. That is wonderful!

Thanks, Kelly. :) The vet says we have to keep her from jumping or doing anything strenuous (she can't even go outside without a leash) for several weeks. Poor baby -- she's not used to being so restricted, so I think it will become difficult when she starts feeling better.

Oh, it's beautiful, no wonder she loved it. Thankyou for posting the link again, I missed it first time.

The crate is a life saver! This is the first time I've had a crate-trained dog, and I have to say that there are real advantages. Bisou spent the night in her crate last night, since I was afraid she'd try to jump off the bed; she usually sleeps with us. She's been napping a lot today, probably because of the pain killers. I think lots of rest is just the ticket for her. :)

Thanks, Taria. I was really happy that she liked it so much. :)

Sandy, I'm sorry your Bisou has an injury. Yikes! It must be very painful. So, many good thoughts coming your way for her quick recovery.

I so enjoyed reading the reaction of your eye doctor to the little dragon quilt. Now that is priceless! :-) Certainly makes all the work worthwhile when someone is so obviously thrilled. Good for you for making her day too.

I remember when I herniated a disk in my neck some years ago, and the pain was *awful*. I felt so bad for Bisou, who just can't possibly understand what happened and why she has to spend so much time in her crate or why she isn't allowed to jump on the furniture right now.

Thanks, Michelle! I really did make my day. :)

Hi Sandy,

Yes, I know what you mean. I had a lab-retriever mix who was a rambunctious pup that liked to bite at the tires when we drive in the driveway. We always drove in slowly, but one day nonetheless, he bit at a tire and ended up breaking his upper jaw. He had surgery, had teeth wired in, and we were told not to let him chew! Yikes! That was hard work. Naturally, he didn't understand. Nevertheless, he mended just fine. :-) I bet it is only a matter time before Bisou can return to her usual antics.

Best regards, Michelle in NV
