My mom did that, too, -- and so do I :) I have a lot of my buttons sorted roughly by color into a little box I got in the fishing tackle department at Fleet Farm, with a separate container for white ones, especially those rather uninteresting one that come off shirts, pajamas, etc. I certainly can't throw away or use for rags anything that has buttons on it.
