christmas applique or foundation piecing

I've got a bit of an idea brewing for Christmas place mats, there will be several different blocks to the design and some will just be filled with christmas prints and in other locations, either classic quilt blocks, or an applique, embellished or not dependent on what it is and maybe some novelty blocks either foundation pieced or not, depending on what is necessary.

Just recently, I saw a heart that a friend had done, it was either foundation pieced or some kind of crazy patch work and it looked really nice, but a heart isn't ideal for Christmas, but I can't think of anything simple that lends itself to that kind of filling, the Christmas shapes I can think of are more complex!

I'm intending to do an ohio star as one block, I've got other star blocks detailed in various books and what not, so it's the less conventional things I'm looking for....

any ideas?

Stockings, simple pine tree shapes, mittens, gingerbread boy/girl, Santa face, snowman, ornament (these can be lots of shapes, and designs too.). Those are just off the top of my head. Oh, candy canes, holly and berries, candles, bells, probably lots more ideas out there.

Bells! That's good, some of the others would work for the crazy patch look too, but the ones I had thought of like holly and berries didn't have big areas that this could be done in.

If these work out they will be a gift for my parents, so I'm trying to keep them classic.

A gift box would be a pretty simple shape. just embelish with a bow. You can make a simple tree shape also, like a standing arrowhead. A candy cane might work. Hope some of this helps. I hope I am understanding what you are looking for.

i'd go with the ornament shapes, round, long skinny bit top and bottom with a big bulb about 1/4 way up from the bottom or down from the top even. then the shape can vary but still have that crazy patch/w look to it. unless i'm totally confuddled yet again, aint i always, lol. jeanne

In Denmark, hearts are a Christmas symbol! You've seen the woven hearts -those get hung on Christmas trees. Roberta in D

Make a big crazy block and cut out pieces for appliques. Look at cookie cutters or kids coloring book pictures for good outline shapes, and just trace around them on the crazy block, then cut out. Bell, star, gingerbread man, tree (triangle with little square at bottom),ball ornament (circle with little tab on it), snowman, holly. Debra in VA See my quilts at
