Christmas Quilts (Survey)

Well, that thread about "Getting to know you ... Holiday Traditions" was fun, but not on topic. Just now, however, Julia in MN mentioned quilts in her entry to that thread. (Thanks, J!)

Soooooo ... I decided to start a new thread about Christmas Quilts. This is definitely On Topic!

From PAT in VA/USA:

  1. Do you have any Christmas Quilts, lap size and larger, in your own home? Yes! I have a Christmas Sampler Quilt on the sofa. It contains the blocks given to me as a farewell gift when I left the Tuesday Evening Quilt Group in California. I set the blocks together with a double sashing.

  1. Do you have any Christmas WH and/or Table Runners? Yes and Yes! I have a Santa runner on the kitchen island and a Snowman topper on an antique trunk. I made both of those. I also have a few small Santa WH. One features a piece of Australian fabric, sent by a RCTQ quilter. It is a Native Santa, with a Kangaroo, and a Koala Bear. Way Cool! I made all those items.

  2. Have you given away any Christmas quilted projects? Yes! I've given numerous Santa WH, and a pretty WH I called Angel-in-law.

  1. King Size TATW that hangs on the LR wall every Christmas. Queen size knitted afghan with embroidered Christmas themes in every other square made for MIL years ago--given back to me when she passed on. Goes on the couch. had curtains made for the baths in the last house--don't have 'such' in this place as we don't have any outside windows except for skylights in each here.

  1. Just didn't get the table set done this year....maybe for next.

  2. One Christmas, I made a quilted pillow for each family member and so many more items over the years that I haven't kept track of.

I have 2 Christmas quilts that are WIPS....a lap quilt and a bed quilt and a nativity panel I bought and plan to quilt or make into a attic windows quilt. I also have a table runner. I tacked the nativity panel up on the living room wall. Everything else is packed away for the move in 2007.

YES. I made "Christmas Traditions," a Quilt-in-a-Day pattern by Wendy Gilbert. It covers my bed every December.

YES. My kitchen table has a snowflake table topper on it, paper-pieced from one of Carol Doak's snowflake patterns. My living room coffee table has a runner, also paper-pieced from another of her snowflake patterns.

YES. I've made four table runners with blocks from "Christmas Traditions" and gave them as gifts two years ago. This year I made several Christmas pillows from paper-pieced blocks.

I have several Christmas Quilts, Wall hangings and other crafty stuff up. I'm not making any more until some of these go away. I swear it looks like the elves had a drunken disorderly time in here (DD helped decorate this year). I do finally have my Quilt Diva loaded as a Christmas present to myself, but I haven't been able to get to it as of yet. Guarding the tree mostly this week until DH's vacation starts Wed. I did see a beautiful Hanukkah table runner on another list that has my mind racing back to that beautiful santa fabric that Virginia Quilter had.... the pattern just might work with that!

Yes. I have one that is roughly a double (between queen and twin incase you don't have that size where your from) my mother made DH and I for our first Christmas. It matches the tree skirt and our stockings she also made us that year. We now also have a matching stocking for each DS too.

No, althogh the quilt by my mother does have a sleeve on it incase I wanted to hang it. I would like to make a few, especially an advent calendar wall hanging for the DSs, but haven't gotten anywhere close to starting yet.

No. This year I will be giving DMIL (and hopefully her DS and her DM) a quilt for Christmas, but they are not 'Christmas quilts'.

I have a red, green and white Triple Irish Chain queen size quilt that started out to just be a Triple Irish Chain but is now the quilt that comes to live on the couch during the holidays.

I made an adaptation of a Thimbleberries alpine star wall hanging that was demo'd on SQ one year. My best free motion quilting *ever*, probably because of the size :-)

One year I made small (18" or so) wall hangings for some family and friends using the whirling octagons pattern and leafy green prints to look like wreaths. That was the first year I had my Baby Lock and could machine embroider -- "Such and Such Family, established 19XX"

A twin size one that goes on my sons bed in December. It's made from fabric received through a RCTQ Christmas Swap back in '96 or so :-)

One of these days I'll turn that old 12 Days of Christmas panel into a quilt for our bed.

Two...well three. A large one that goes on the main entry wall, a little one that goes in the nook above the stairs and the third one was just made for the guild holiday challenge. That one is hanging at the local library. Dunno where I'll hang it in the house next year.

Years ago I got these cute "Little Quilts" pre-printed panels with angels and such on them. I made one for each of my sisters. They're quite cute little wallhangings.

I have a WIP (top is done, but it isn't quilted) that was made from blocks I received in Teri's You Pick It swap. I might have a picture of it around here somewhere, and I'll try to post it.

Yep - one WH (that for some reason is sitting in my closet waiting to be hung). It's the NOEL WH that's in my Webshots album.

One year I made pillows for my coworkers - I think there were 8 that year - and one year I made a couple of Christmas WHs. My mother is hinting that she'd like a Christmas quilt, but so far she hasn't been given one!

I have two Christmas WH. One is a log cabin wreath made from an Eleanor Burns pattern. The other is an applique sampler, made by a friend.

Yes. I've made that log cabin wreath several times. Also, I make a quilty item every year for an auction for my Junior Woman's Club. The last few years have been YBR in holiday fabrics. I've also made a tree skirt and some other lap size quilts over the years. Mary

The only Christmas 'quilt' that I have currently is a Lemoyne (sp?) star WH that I actually use on my coffee table. There are many other projects that I'd love to do but it's the old 'so many quilts, so little time' issue.

The Christmas gifts that I've given to family thus far are not quilted but are needlepoint Christmas stocking. Each new niece/nephew gets one from Aunt Kim for their first Christmas. Trying to finish up the latest one now for 2.5 mo old Jackson. It really helps when Mom & Dad want to know the sex of the babies before they are born when their birthdays are late in the year! Gives Aunt Kim a head start. Not the case with these folks! Everyone waited to be surprised. Personally, I like the surprise better but only having 2.5 months to get a stocking needlepointed, blocked, lined and put together makes Aunt Kim just a tad anxious!

I finished the top of a lap-sized Christmas quilt this morning. It is Log Cabin blocks, in Christmas colors, but not Christmas prints. The top left section has dark blue night skies with a single large golden star, the botom right has an appliqued Holy Family. I made it loosely based on a pattern I bought at my LQS.

  1. Have two completed - last year's pieced and applique BOMs/ They are large lap size. Also have a lap quilt of Christmas Tree blocks which is waiting for quilting. I was going to use it as a backing for one of the others, but liked it so much decided it should be a quilt in its own right.
  2. Also have a wallhanging ready for quilting/embellishment. No time to finish it for this year, but did finish DSisIL's quillow and wrapped it up this morning. I have taken photos which will appear after Christmas - sometimes she looks at my piccies so don't want to spoil the surprise. I have just realised that the rest of my quilted decorations are still in the loft, including my favourite coffee table topper. That sums this year's panic up! By next year I will also have completed Kim's mystery. I rather like the table runner design she gives today, but until we go to DD's on Saturday I have something every day, and tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday have things in the evenings too so no spare time this week.
  3. Last year DD expressed a wish for some instant decorations, so I have collected a box full over the year (bought her a box to keep them in too!) They include several items I have made over the last couple of years - a giant stocking, table runner, cushion, tree surround thingy, as well as candle holders, wreaths, table decorations, etc., so instant decorations it will be. She already has a tree and decorations for it (last time I heard from her, her kittens - Mia and Kiwi's siblings - were swinging from the branches in a concerted ornament hunt!), and she has a wreath for the front door I made her two years ago if she can find it after her house move.

This year I have also given table runners and mats as Christmas gifts to other friends/relatives.

By next year I hope to have done Cheryl's tree wall hanging, and one for DD if I manage it. I got the green fabric while Christmas fabric was still plentyful, and some very dark blue/blacks for the background, and also some tiny decorations, so the ingredients are all assembled.

I really enjoy doing the Christmas things, I think its the richness of the colours I like.

I have lots of things in work with a Christmas theme. Does that count? Hot pads for my sister, a tablecloth for a daughter, pillows for a friend and a quilt for me that's been a WIP for 3 years now. I also have finished pillows and an afghan that a dear friend crocheted for me many years ago.

I have a queen size Christmas Stack'n'Whack on my bed.

Definitely. There is a double pinwheel wall hanging in the dining room and a paper-pieced nativity wall hanging in the living room. And I have table runners on the buffet, the coffee table, and an end table. I also have a table runner that I will use on the dining room table for Christmas dinner. I also have a pieced-and-tied tree skirt.

One year, I gave my sisters quilted table runners; another year it was potholders. I have given my daughter-in-law a quilted Christmas vest and a snowman wall hanging. My daughter and daughter-in-law both have quilted tree skirts that I made.
