cleaned sewing room today

My friend came over today and for two hours the two of us worked on cleaning/organizing my sewing room; so that I am not losing things under other unrelated things and the floor is now exposed and vacuumed. I still have a dresser top to work on and magazines to go through and cull. She took my huge basket of scraps to go through. She picks out what she or her GD might want and gives the rest to charity. My husband doesn't understand why I can give away so much fabric and then buy more. I wish he hadn't witnessed that.

Also we are going on a two week driving trip soon and I am hoping to get to "Road to Calif." for the second time. I want to take my latest project and my featherweight. I took the SM in today to get tuned-up and the tech wasn't positive he will have it ready by the time we leave. Waaahh! I guess I will have to take a different SM then. I have two computerized Vikings and my dd has an older model she could let me borrow.

Tee Hee! I also had to do this as DH decided it was about time he painted in there. OMG! I did not realise just how much I've managed to accumulate. For instance I was saving flannel FQs for a flannel raggy quilt - I now have more than enough (YAY!) so that will be my next project. Then I want to do a whole mess of quilts for Ronnie McDonnie house who have been a bit neglected over the last year.

Yup that's my plan. Oh, and I managed to (sniffle sniffle) part with about

4 grocery bags of fabric scrappy bits and other bigger bits and some horribly shocking poly bat (where did that come from???) to take into the art teacher at school. And I also parted with a whole mess of magazines and some old books for her too.

I am trying to do mine, bit by bit. However, I now seem to have more "useful boxes" and bags to store things in than I have things to store! As well as a stash habit (which I am keeping fairly under control at the moment) Staples is my drug of choice. I just love all those plastic stacking boxes and all those different pens and pencils.

I bought another lot yesterday. Wonder what I will decide I can lose in them this time? Yes, that's the problem. I have a visual memory. So I remember where things WERE, and when I have put them all in the boxes, I forget where they WENT.

Back to Staples for some ... LABELS!

The biggest problem I have when I straighten up/reorganize is that I remember where things used to be, but don't always remember the new "more logical" place that I have found. Maybe I need to make a diagram:)

I have the very same problem! I remember what pile it was in....but not what cabinet, drawer, etc. And being neat doesn't always take care of the mess! I can be very efficient in putting things away very nicely, then turn around and still have a pile needing a place to be put away! I can get more put away when I "cram"!!! KJ

No matter how logical and organized I try to be, my memory has gotten so that I have to make really good notes. There's a note taped to my computer monitor that says: fleece pattern, trim and poms in fleece box. Simply having a box labeled 'fleece' wasn't enough. Putting the things that I would need to sew with fleece together was logical - maybe, hence - the monitor note until it's firmly in my insufficient memory. There's a huge note on my backing bin that says: more backing with finished quilts. Hunting something makes me so unhappy when I could be creating. On the other hand, I do love a good rootle through the stash - that's different. Polly (SpellCheck wants me to remove the words 'poms' and 'rootle'. Anyone sewing fleece preemie caps knows you need pom-poms and all of us know that 'rootle' is a very good word.)

Teacher disease, tharris... I know it well! How else do you explain a whole stack of 12 drawing boards, a gallon of PVA, and several boxes of things like erasers and pencils in a private home? And a dozen msmall plastic mixing bowls and two dozes wooden spoons... And I need some clear plastic shoe boxes for keeping current projects in...

I'm like this with Lakelans and boxes for the fridge and freezer as well as stash storage! I'm also Stack-box queen of Kent!

Ah yes! But do you then remember what 'Lg blue NTG's' actually MEANS?

PS: Will answer you email soon, but the fibro has been playing up and I've had no energy these last few days.

Gosh, Featherweights are such simple machines, and there's so little to go wrong with them. All they basically need is a good cleaning out, oil where metal moves agains metal and white lithium grease on the gears.... about a 1/2 hours work. If it's been maintained regularly, and not abused, it doesn't go out of time or anything so adjustments aren't needed. They're pretty finely crafted machines. . I'm surprised he can't get it done for you sooner -- JHMO

Same here! I teach school, and there are some people who get bothered by a "messy" desk.

One year I made a point of keeping a clean desktop -- only things needed for the next morning were there. I'd come in the next morning and my stuff would be gone! I couldn't figure out how that was happening since I locked the door everyday when I left. Of course a fellow teacher said it must have been the janitor.

So one day I purposely made a "mess" on the top of what I left out for the morning. The "mess" was pure camoflague. I knew what was where. Sure enough, one day after school I was talking to a parent outside my classroom door. It was late. Our meeting had been in another room. I suppose folks thought I had left for the day. You'll never guess who we saw rifling through the "mess" on my desktop -- the school principal!!!

LOL - that's why I've taken to locking my drawers - you never can trust a principal!!! ROFLOL. Since I've been doing what are called "recall days" during the holidays (I have to work 4 days during christmas vacation) I've managed to do a little searchin' for all my missing pens, pencils, rulers, stickers, etc - you will not believe where they have turned up. I reckon I've found about 90% - and not in my office!!!

I used to buy the most garish cartoony rulers, pencils, pencil cases, folders, etc. I could find for work. No adult would be seen dead with them, and anyone who 'borrowed' them would be easily identified.

I still have them!

My husband's uncle used to give us pencils with his name printed on them and a double eraser on the end, so they looked a bit like a hammer. The kids never had to worry about someone else taking their pencils -- it would have been pretty easy to tell who had done it. :)

I had to change offices last term. The change was from a big one, to a small one, supposedly because then I wouldn't have to store all the Department stuff anymore now I've resigned my management role. Trouble is, when I shifted all _my own_ stuff down the hall, there _was no_ Department stuff left! I really must stop buying in stuff for school. I'm rotten at charging them for it. Trouble is, I like my own things and when I need something, I need it. I can't always rely on requisition, and besides, up till now I _was_ the Department. Just me.

And don't get me onto the stuff I bought when I was doing Project Linus for school!
