Thank you for starting this thread Polly. I too want to create a crazy quilt but don't like the "blocky" look. I just cannot fathom me wrestling with a full sized piece while putting on more and more little pieces. I know there is a way for everyone to tackle such a project to their own liking but the tips of others are sure helpful! I found the idea of making them in strips could be incorporated in some way rather than just blocks of scrappy squares turned wholecloth..... hmm.... that looked odd after I typed it.
I don't appliqué so the hiding of the squared off seams is a tough one for me to attack. Not that this sucker is anywhere in the near future of my quilting world.

Two other thoughts:
I know I saw a picture of an interesting crazy quilt somewhere. It had long wide strips of solid crazy quilt, then a narrower strip of velvet or satin with various lace and tatting samples sewn across the short span (like little ladder rungs), then another wide strip of crazy, then another narrow strip of solid velvet with an arrangement of a fancy button collection on it, another wide crazy strip, then another of lace samples, and finally a last wide strip of the crazy. The join between the crazy strips and the narrower strips was embroidered just like the joins between fabrics in the crazy strips. It was absolutely lovely.
This brings me to my other thought. If someone simply doesn't like square blocks it is fine to make any size or shape blocks. My great grandma made one with rectangles measuring roughly 10" X 16". She stitched them together in long columns sewing on the 16" sides, and added long sashing strips between the columns similar to the plain strips in a Chinese Coins quilt.

A nice brown might also do nicely, or she could use whatever color appears most often in the blocks to really make the sashing blend in. Debra in VA See my quilts at
Ooooooo. Cranberry... that would be gorgeous. See?? This is why I NEED this group.
Cindy > Cranberry. Who'd a thought it.
i love cranberry, jelly, sauce, drink, juice specially mixed with rum, ice and whatever other fruits we got round the plantation for xmas in summer, oh yea i also love it quilts. :)) it is a holiday item, eh. j.
Well, you see . . . I know most of you don't have time to sit around talking with crazy quilts but cranberry says gloriously rich whereas black says drama. The coffee's good, come talk to the colors with me. Polly

I'll bring the oatmeal cookies; with and without raisins, and the chocolate chip ones, too. Got the Butterfly Studio poured yesterday :) Whilst the fellas were waiting for the cement truck to come by--had DH pop out there with coffee and warm cookies....Concrete Bossman said: "Break Time boys--Hot cookies today : )" They were tickled as it was a bit nippy but not really cold : )
Butterfly (ohhhhhhh, I'm excited!!!!)
you just bought their souls :-) nothing a workman likes more than being looked after right so they will work their socks off to say thanks :-D
Howdy!
Too cute: having a Butterfly Studio "poured." Reminds me of a scene from "Good Neighbors" when Barbara & Tom were busy making up a batch of frugal Christmas plans, while Margo (next door) was "having Christmas delivered in a van!" Kind of a Christmas Kit (only it didn't happen). * A B-fly Studio Kit shows up in a series of trucks, vans & lorries. Insert Tab A into Slot A, fold here (do not spindle or mutilate), press firmly in that corner, and there you have it: Butterfly Studio! ;-D Please, Captain Picard, just speak up and Make it so!

Had their Bossman stop by today just to say 'thanks' from his workers : )

Red Roosters:
1 1/2 quarts cranberry juice cocktail 1 (6-ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate, defrosted 2 cups vodkaCombine all of the ingredients in a large plastic container. Freeze for several hours. It will not freeze solid, but rather achieve the consistency of a slushy.
Scoop into glasses. Enjoy
Cindy > should have mashed the potatoes at Thanksgiving BEFORE starting on these.
I did that one year and decided to run the recipe through the blender. The lid wasn't on tight. A new and exciting decorator touch to the kitchen ceiling (not to mention: stove, cabinets, and me). We just giggled. It was the 2nd batch. Polly
NOW you tell me how I should have started the cleaning of the cupboard doors! It would have been soooooooooo much more fun the other way. This way, I just turned the Christmas Carols up on high and away we went. No, we didn't get them all done, just the ones that really needed it. I ain't pushing it for nothing or nobody :)

Hahhahahahahha!
Cindy
That is exactly what I was going to tell Polly to do(how I've done it). Glad I read thru all the msgs before going thru the work of trying to put all that into words. LOL You did a better job than I would have.
