quilt display

I am considering putting up a curtain rod on my sewing (dining) room window and using that to display current quilts. It would be a 72" wooden rod on brackets and I would hang a valance (to be made) normally using hook and loop and take that down to display a quilt. Are there any drawbacks to this idea?

I only make small quilts, 36"x36", so, folded in half, it would hang down

18" and would not block the window.

Fading, especially if it's a sunny window. And some quilts are more translucent than others, so you'd see all the seams, loose threads etc. Maybe you could put a black-out roller blind on the window to use when you have a quilt up. Roberta in D

I would hang a curtain on that window and hang your quilts somewhere where the entire quilt can be seen. I agree with Roberta - hanging in a window can do damage to the material and may show all those little irregularities like threads and seams.

Sunlight can bleach fabrics in a fairly short amount of time so you might want to have something between the quilt and the window glass. A piece of fabric on the window side of the quilt should be enough to protect the quilt. It would work just like a curtain lining does to protect curtain fabric.

I really like that idea, Roberta! I have one quilt that faded badly (just one of the fabrics, actually) from hanging across the room from a window shaded by a large overhang. :( I've learned my lesson, believe me! Quilts can and do fade when exposed to sunlight.

This is exactly what I love about this newsgroup! I had not even thought about the sun!!! I will close the blinds when I do put up a quilt for display. My quilts do not stay in the house for long, anyway. I just want to have the latest completed quilt up before I deliver it to the friend or the hospital.
