I'm sure we would both deserve it... if not for that then *surely* there's something we've done recently to deserve it??? I'm in the doghouse- literally!!!- for all the noise from the vacuum and shampoo-er. Not even Hoover will come near me with his red rubber ball begging to go play in the backyard.

I just looked up echo quilting in Diane Gaudinsky's Guide to Machine Quilting book. She uses free motion presser foot and uses the edges of the foot to sort of gauge spacing. Keep your eyes on the previous line of stitching not the needle.
Harriet Hargrave says you can lightly mark the echo lines when you are learning just to get the feel of it. She does the first quilting line in a ditch around the edges of your design. SO I guess she really does an outline of the appliqué right up against but not on it. She says keep your eye on the needle for this. Next row use the edge of your free motion foot for a gauge and work clockwise.
I think I just usually try to get up against the appliqué or within
1/8" or so and free motion slowly to get started. I think you just need to start experimenting. I am trying to see in my mind happy hooting out of those preemie babies. : )If Leslie is reading, have you tried the new fancy free motion foot for the 6600? I am thinking about getting one. This machine and I need to learn to get along. LOL

Miss Polly, That depends!! ;) Let's talk about free motion machine quilting. I use a darning foot and drop the feed dogs.
To echo quilt an appliqué motif, I like to stitch first line very close (1/8" if possible) to the motif. Then I go out to the edge of the foot. I try (the operative word is 'try') to let the edge of the foot skim along the previous line of stitching for the second and all subsequent lines. Of course eventually the line is interrupted. Then I just swirl or loop over to a place where I can continue the echo.
To echo quilt a quilting motif, I would start the first line at the edge of the foot, and continue as above. That is so the quilting motif will not get lost in the surrounding quilting.

There was a little quilt I wanted to try, a Partridge in a Pear Tree. I just happened to have some fabric that was just right for the pears; they look like I worked really hard to get the shading pretty. The pears wanted to be echo quilted and I was hoping for guidance on how to improve my echoes. I apologize if that tune goes endlessly around and around in your head. Polly

Its sitting in my sewing bag complete with quilting thread and other pretty threads for embelishment. There's a very creased piccy of it in my webshots 'Quilting in Progress' (or as it should be called 'Quilting in the Sewing Bag!)
I have the same block, finished, in my Sampler Quilt in the 'Quilts' section. That one is quilted. I just enjoyed doing the block and decided to do it again in Christmassy fabrics - and, oh dear, Christmas is coming!
Its one of the free pattterns on that site.
