Well, if we're going to go that far, you might as well clean out what's lurking *Inside* the refrigerator. If your soy sauce is 9 years old and turned a fuzzy green color, perhaps you'll want to toss it too. =) Polly
Good Lord, Polly, I hope everyone's all right!! :-(
Well, come on by and feel free to check on me and my dryer!! It should more than meet your standards! I had a motor die about 6 years ago due to too much lint in the exhaust hose ... I learned my lesson well (having had to pay so much for it! LOL) and now keep a rabid eye on lint build-up.
Also, at the time that my motor died, I had a fella come out and clean the exhaust/vent and found 6 dead birds - if that's not enough to make one clean the exhaust, nothing will! Yuk! Those poor birdies!! :-(
Mine is exactly like that, too, Sally. After years of the 'elephant's trunk' going through the window, I was thrilled when we got this one! . In message , Sally Swindells writes
Don't even THINK about the stove! I had a half gallon bottle of cooking oil fall out of the cupboard over the stove and shatter.....****!!! I spent a whole day cleaning up and in, out, under and behind the stove. I have NO idea what some of that stuff was but at least it wasn't moving!!
I had a dryer guy who I called last year because it was taking forever to dry clothes. My dryer is on an inside wall and the vent had to make several bends and turns to get the air to an outside wall.
He told me it would be great idea to just unhook the vent under the house and just let the air flow down under there. My dryer worked great! So much faster.
Until this year when the termite guy came to inspect. He said there was black mold growing on everything under there and the wood was so soaked he could push his thumb nail into the wood on our floor joists.
Plus, we had termites. Now, he couldn't say whether the two were related, but he suggested we re-open the vents in the foundation and set a fan up under the house to dry it out.
I guess last fall when I went around and closed all the vents to under the house so the pipes wouldn't freeze and my floors wouldn't be so cold, it sealed in all the moisture and I never thought a thing about it. Let it run for about 7-8 months like that.
So it's hard for me to imagine it being a good thing to vent your drying into your house.
FiederEls, please, please, PLEASE, go buy at least 2 smoke alarms. If you can't find them cheap, I will send them to you. Put one close to your kitchen and one in your bedroom.
Tell me when you do this so I will not worry. I lost family in a fire last year and it should not have happened. They had SA's but the batteries were dead.
That reminds me, one year our vent got all blocked up and we ended up disassembling the hose. It was in the winter (and cold enough to keep ice cream frozen!) and it was really lovely how it warmed up the whole house! :-)
We only kept it that way until the fella came out to clean the lint traps on the exhaust. But it sure was nice whilst it lasted! :-)
Well. That was fun. Some of you are safer because of this conversation. Some of you will have more efficient clothes dryers and, we hope, a lower electricity bill. For darn sure, all of us have learned a lot. You were all very good sports and I do thank you. Polly (I promise not to nag again, at least not for a while)

Fabric softener sheets can leave a residue on the filter. If you don't use fabric softener sheets, it shouldn't be a problem. It might still be a good idea to pull it out once in a while and try to pour a little water through it. If the water doesn't run through easily wash it with a little detergent and water. If the residue builds up, the air won't flow through your dryer as well and it will take longer to dry your clothes.

Mine too is not vented to the outside. It is wall mounted in the laundry room and I just have the window open in there 90% of the year. Then point the directional vents on the door towards the door between the laundry and the hall and it heats up my hallway and DD2's bedroom. The lint cleaner gets cleaned after every load but only really needs it after certain loads. Not many fuzzzies in general.
I cut out an ad and stuck it with my spices last night so that when I have a minute I'll go through them and toss the offending ones..Anyway..the ad ( by McCormick Spices ) showed a rectangular tin of spices...and the glass jar with the green/gray cap. The ad states : Except for black pepper our spices in the rect. tin are at leat 15 years old" And in the case of the glass jar..." If you see Baltimore , MD on the label the spice is at leat 15 years old " !!! I know that I have saffron that is even older !!! Mary
wow! i hope everyone was ok after the fire! i know how she feels...my XDH was doing laundry in our old house, overloaded the dryer with towels and a fire started because the motor was overtaxed. he loaded it, and went outside to mow the grass, he didnt see the smoke until the nieghbor came running over to tell him (i was at work). we only lost a corner of the laundry room and the dryer itself. not to mention almost all of my new towels. so i, too, am diligent about the vents and traps. now if i could get a handle on weeding the gardens!! amy
Good idea, and glad I don't have to :-) Mine's a ceramic top installed into the granite counter, no place for anything to fall down into. But now that we're all in a state of domestic virtue, check the toaster! Roberta in D
