fabric amounts for quilts

Butterfly (who got the _fall_ Keepsake special and was quite disappointed. Mainly SUMMER fabrics and 10 diff colorways of same design. Last one I got a few years back was so much better.And I saved for 12 months to be able to afford it.)

I kind of think that is the direction this will go if I take it on. I might just think about it forever. I rarely do quilts that are all several fabrics that are all thought out ahead. Most of my stuff is scrappy in some way. So what is your deadline project? I don't do deadlines so well, especially since dh retired!

Maybe it's counterproductive to start out thinking you have to make a king-size quilt. Just shop your stash and make a couple of compasses and a couple of pickle dishes. Stick them on the design wall. Make a couple more. Are you tired of them yet? Add the connecting "squares". Do you like it? Does it look done to you? Want to make more? Going by the picture, they can all be different but in a similar color palette. Try a wild maverick pickle dish that really pops out and see if you want to keep it. Experiment! Well, there is that. I don't gamble. I just hate losing and am not so lucky that way so I keep my money. The one thing I have found is that a random/ not selected by me batch of fat quarters will add fabrics that I wouldn't buy but do add interest to my work. I always thought of last season patterns as those from a year ago too. I get what they mean but like Butterfly I would'nt have gone there first thing. I wonder if Keepsake would do an exchange? I refer to my enjoyment of ordering 100 fat quarters from Keepsake for $99 as my form of gambling. It would be easy to drop $100 at the river boats in Illinois in just an hour and I would go home empty handed. By ordering fat quarters I have the excitement of sorting through the fabric, matching it up for Yellow Brick Road quilts and occasionally giving a few fat quarters away. Instead of one evening of fun on the river boat I have several days of fun with the fat quarters. All fabrics are first quality but some are really out of my style. The last batch yielded a great red, black and white throw and another patriotic throw plus the start of a pretty pink baby quilt. My type of gambling.

Already washed, so I'll find a way to use them...I just ahve to remember what Miz Ragmop said about the 'seasons' If I'm ever inclined to buy more. Not a problem with fabric quality, just not what I had anticpated.
