Quilt show haul!

I got lots-o-goodies!

One vendor had $4 per yard fabric, and if you bought more than 10 yds it's $2 a yd. The deal was that no cutting was done, sales were of whatever size piece you picked up, and sizes on the shelves ranged from 1/4 yd to 10 yd.

I bought 10.1 yds at that booth. The closest to an even 10 yds. they had all day. I got some yummy Robert Kauffman prints including 3 yards of a realistic looking basket weave, the other 7 yards was smaller stuff. Yes, Kauffman for $2/yd. I also picked up a fat 1/4 for a dollar, a fat 1/8 for 50 cent, and a handful of large scraps perfect for applique pieces for a dollar. Each scrap was 1/4 yd or bigger with maybe a 4 inch square or two cut out of one corner, so that was about 1 1/2 yds of quilt shop fabric for a buck! I guess the scraps were left after making a sample quilt, but they were perfect for my use in applique, and a great price. My only regret is that I didn't fill a bag for $5 as it would have been well worth it.

My other purchases were an applique quilt pattern with four birds by Donna Poster, and a 100m spool of Japanese imported Kinkame silk thread, color number 153 (a beige color). I hope that $5 was a reasonable price and it's a good brand of thread. I wanted to try the silk for hand applique and a quilt show is the only way I'll ever be able to see it before buying it.

Anyway, I spent about $35.00 and a non-quilting friend who went with me spent nearly $90.00. She found a booth full of embroidery transfers and kits and went a little wild.

It's after midnight and I've been up since 6 am. I have a touch of food poisoning so I feel crummy. I'm getting a bit punchy, so I hope this post made sense. Time for bed. Debra in VA See my quilts at

HooooBoy! what fun. Wish I could have been there. And yes, Debra. The $5 for a 100m of Kinkamee is an okay price. That's about what I paid for mine. You are going to love it. Polly

It's good to know that was a good price for the thread. I've read that silk makes a nearly invisible stitch so I figured the beige would work for most fabrics. Do you think I should have a gray for using with darks? Debra in VA See my quilts at

Yes, there's a dark gray that plays nice with lots of darks - Kinkamee calls it 147. Pick up a spool of that one when you can. If you enjoy hand applique, continue to collect until you have a wider range. My own level of hand-sewing will never reach the skill of some who enter quilt shows but oh my, how I do love to admire their ability. You haven't mentioned it. Did they have any quilts at the show where you made the Big Haul? and what did you think of them? Polly

I'm still amazed myself. This sort of thing never happened before to me either.

Ok, I'll look for the 147 in July at my next quilt show. I'm fairly sure the same vendor will probably be there too because they were last year.

I think I had better make a new subject line for the show description so everyone who wants to read it will notice it. I wouldn't want someone to miss out because it was buried in this discussion of my purchases.

Wow Debra! You scored! I've never tried that particular brand of silk thread, so please post after you use it and let us know what you think. I love using silk thread for hand applique, as well as machine applique - wonderful stuff!
