Flannel Binding

Hi all, I am new to the group, been reading for a couple of weeks. Now I have a problem I need help with. I've made a flannel quilt and can't find anything on the proper or suggested way to bind it. Specifically, I was wondering if I should use my normal double fold binding. With the added thickness of flannel I am not sure if this is the best choice. Any suggestions, anyone done some of these? Help . . . And thanks in advance for your assistance.

I have made only a couple flannel quilts. I used regular quilting cotton (not flannel) for the binding because I was concerned about the bulk. Also flannel is not as tightly woven and I thought the regular quilting cotton might wear better. If you do use flannel for the binding, you probably want to make a somewhat wider binding than you usually would.

for a couple of weeks.

Well, I have to admit, I never thought of using regular quilting cotton for the binding. Will think on that idea. Thanks for your response.

I put a flannel binding on a quilt last year. The best that I can say about the experience is that it was difficult to do. Unless the quilt requires an extra soft outer edge, then I recommend using normal quilting cotton -- not flannel for bindings.

Wekcome! I agree with those who suggested using regular cotton for the binding. Harder wearing than flannel! Roberta in D

Welcome, Sandy. I'm joining those who want you to use regular cotton for the binding. 'They say' that a quilt's binding is the first to become worn and you just know that flannel likes to ravel. And furthermore, since you'll be stitching the binding to flannel, you might consider (even if you are using regular cotton) using a binding cut at 3" and stitching the 3/8" seam allowance. That ought to help your creation have the longest lifespan you can give it. Polly

Well, hi there, Spikey Sandy! Welcome to the group. :) As Kay told you in NQP, you've had lots of good advice, so best of luck with the binding. :)

Hidey Ho Sandy - and all - thanks for the welcome. I've been following the group with some interest (lurking) for a couple of weeks. This was the first time I've introduced myself and asked for help. OK, so it looks like there is some varying opinions on the binding, as in most things quilty, lol. Either regular cotton or 3" flannel double fold. Hmmmm, have to see what I have in my stash that would work besides the flannel. I do have the perfect flannel for the binding, of course.

Thanks again, for the advice and the welcome!

Hi and welcome,

I've made one flannel quilt and never even wondered about the wisdom of using flannel for the binding. I used it, made it double fold, and had no problems.

LOL! This group is famous for giving lots of opinions. And I *need* to call you Spikey Sandy, because there are several Sandy/Sandi variations here. There's Sandi from BC, Sandy/Ragmop in TX, and I can't remember offhand who else besides myself.

Ok, I'll be Spikey Sandy here too . . . . . it does fit! OK, I'm going to use flannel since its going to an adult who won't drag it around (it would take 2 men and a boy to do that anyway, very heavy). We live in the panhandle of Idaho and it gets pretty cold here, so I made it accordingly. Its 50 degrees right now, and below freezing at night. Love fall, sorry to those of you who don't get fall. We've only been here a little over a year, but I REALY love the 4 seasons.

Off to the studio to finish the darn quilt so I can deliver it. And again, thanks for all the suggestions. The answers ran about 50/50, so I'm comfortable.
