In order to keep the edges of my quilt soft, I would like to use a flannel binding. The backing is flannel, while the top is pieced quilter's cotton. Do I make the binding the same as usual or are there any special considerations when using flannel for binding a quilt?

I used a flannel binding on a quilt with flannel top and back. I didn't even think about it causing problems...and it didn't! It didn't fray, and it really wasn't too bulky. It worked great, and you can see it on Webshots under "flannel quilt".
I have never done a flannel binding; I have always used quilting cotton for binding, even on an all-flannel quilt. That being said, I think you'd want to make your binding at least 1/2" wide to allow for an adequate seam allowance. Flannel is more loosely woven than most quilting cottons, so it will probably be a bit more stretchy and possibly harder to apply. Because it is more loosely woven, it probably won't wear as well either. It will be more bulky than a quilting cotton binding, too.
