FMQ bobbin tension

For those FM quilters who bought an extra bobbin holder to adjust the tension for FM quilting, did you make the tension tighter or looser than for regular stitching?

Thanks! Michelle in Nevada

It's the good old stand-by answer.... it depends! LOL Do a sample FMQing using the same fabrics and batting as you used for the actual quilt. If the bobbin thread comes to the top then tighten the bobbin holder tension. If the top thread shows on the bottom then loosen the bobbin tension. Ideally, the threads should meet in the middle with neither one showing on the opposite side. It helps to use different color threads in the top and bobbin for the test sample- as long as they are the same weights as the threads you will be using for the actual quilting.

In some instances having the bobbin thread showing on top is a good thing. Free motion embroidery often uses that technique.

Have fun!
