Fooling the Bernina

This went well. I just finished a sweet little pastel preemie quilt. It called for being tied instead of quilting and I do listen to the quilts. Wondering what stitch would do the best job, I spied the 'sewing on buttons' function. Ah. Just right. It stitches a few stitches in place, swings over a few times, swings back to knot off, and stops when the deed is done. Voila and Viola! The Bernina didn't seem to care that we didn't use buttons - not a good idea on a preemie quilt - and I was finished in just no time. Now we must trim the pokeys. Polly

I really wanted to tie it with some lovely lavender silk ribbon bows but that would not have good for a newborn quilt. As Archie Bunker used to say, I had to 'stifle' myself. Polly

Do you find you have to adjust anything to do this? I've tried doing this on my machine (a Brother) and I find that the two halves of the design get off. Even if the machine doesn't have to move the quilt sandwich side to side, there still is a bit of the design sewed moving forwards and a bit moving back and it never seems to get to the original position and then what would be back tracking to sew the next one if it were continuing is also slightly off.

Just a very minor suggestion, Anne. Try a test with pressure down tighter. Maybe if your Brother can get a firm grip it will be able to hold its place and do a nice heart. The print I was doing a simple 'button' stitch was so busy that nothing was going to show anyway. Polly

Now, that's a great idea Polly. Two of my Vikings have that function also...I must try it on a quilt!

That's funny. Somehow my mental picture of having Vikings around sewing on buttons is a hoot. I think of Vikings with helmets with horns out pillaging and burning. I suppose if anyone could get Vikings to sew buttons, you're the person who could do it. =) Polly

There might be a balance adjustment you need to make the two halves line up. Check your manual. If not, the next time you take it in for servicing, be sure to tell the technician. There may be an internal balance adjustment. My Bernina has some balance issues with a very seldom used tree design. One side is fine and the other side is stretched. It has a hard time staying in balance even when I get it adjusted.

And I bet the buttons would never fall off if a Viking sewed it on!

Anne it sounds as if the balance is off on the machine. There should be instructions on how to correct the balance in your manual. Or take it to the shop to find out how to do it.

Howdy!

Indeed, this is what Roberta taught me while she was living in the land of (former) Vikings.
