Quilt top finished.....now for the questions

If I am doing a quilt that is only 44" across, I do the top and bottom first and then the sides so that I the length of one cut of the fabric will do. I then piece the sides to make their appropriate size.

I dug out a quilt top I had started a few years ago and finished it this weekend. It's the weaver fever pattern...........four ver. It's very striking in teals and purple. I'm ready to put the borders on and I just can't remember... do the sides or the top borders go on first?

Also, I think I will hand quilt. It's too big to machine quilt. Do I sandwich it and put the binding on and the last step would be to hand quilt or do you put the binding on after it's quilted?

Is there a "how-to" website for hand quilting? To get me started anyway. What is the acceptable minimum stitches per inch? Cotton thread only?

The quilt has no future home yet so I thought I would take my time and try the hand quilting, which I haven't done before.

Yes I will definately post pictures.

I bought a deposable camera and gave it to my Son to take pics of the crafty things I have made for him and his girlfriend. When I get it back, hopefully in a couple of weeks I will finish the film off with my projects here at home, develop, then post.

Another question...I need to buy my backing material and batting yet. What's a good batting to get for a first time hand quilter? I think I need something that's not too thick so I have more control of my needle?

Thank you for the help. I'm looking forward to the challenge There may be no Quilt Police but they should have an information desk

I wish I could do that, Debbi. But I have an obsession about no seams in my outside borders. I cut my borders on the lengthwise of the fabric so I can do this. I realize this requires purchasing extra fabric but I use the leftover fabric either on another quilt or on backs of quilts.

Wow thank you for the sites. I've bookmarked them all. I need refresher courses in a lot of techniques so they will help me out.

You suggest I do a bit of machine quilting.......then perhaps stitch in the ditch for the borders might be acceptable? When I get the borders on they will be 2" and 3" so that should be sufficient.

The soonest I can get anywhere for backing and batting is Saturday....work tends to interfere.......so I'll have time to read up and make my shopping list.

Thanks so much

Ann, It sounds wonderful. If this quilt still has no home base, I'll be glad to give it a home of it's own here in IL.
