Gee's Bend Quilts

Hi All,

Just returned from the Gee's Bend quilt exhibit at the Tacoma Art Museum. Seeing these quilts in person makes you realize what all the hoopla is about. Seeing such sweetness and beauty come from women who have been so materially poor their entire lives is inspiring.

Most of these quilts are untility quilts--like the ones I grew up with. It was really touching seeing how an isolated area has developed their own vocabulary around quilting patterns.

And, see the quilting that was done with everything from tiny stitches to big stitches in patterns that indicated how far a quilter should reach.

If you get a chance, this is a great show to see!

Happy quilting,

Lenore

I saw this exhibit at the deYoung Museum in San Francisco with my dd (art history major) and we were both just amazed and awed by the work of those women.......

I agree with you, any one who is a quilter should see it......an example of our humble beginnings.......

Howdy!

Not to offend but, this is most definitely not an example of "our humble beginnings" in my quilting world, which goes back 6 or 7 generations. Tho' poor, penny-pinching women, my quilting family had more to work with than most of the Gee's Bend quilters, and prided themselves in doing traditional patterns and tiny stitches. I cannot lay claim to anything like the Gee's Bend quilts.

Gee's Bend is a unique unto itself example of the culture of poverty but determination and need-to-quilt of these women. Tragically, so many of the quilters are citing examples of being "ripped off" w/ this exhibit & its sales.

Glad that so many of you are still enjoy> I saw this exhibit at the deYoung Museum in San Francisco with my dd (art

Not to be critical but Gees Bend quilts are modern within the global history of quilting. They certainly do not represent a 'beginning' but are unique.
