Getting ready to free motion quilt!

I have a little tradition- when I go to the hospital, I always make a bright, cheery quilt to take with me. Hospitals are usually soooo cold- so the quilt keeps me warm, cheers me up and invites folks to come into my room and talk quilting. My 4 y.o. hip replacement will be re-replaced on May 9, so I'm working on "My Hip-py Horse-pital Quilt" made with the Mythical Horses panel with several borders added. All the individual horses in the center panel are outline quilted in black cotton thread- most of the stitching was done one stitch at a time using the hand wheel or tapping the foot pedal- tedious! (It's not outline quilted just around the groups of horses- every single one is outlined) Here's pics- be sure to put on your dark glasses before you click the link- it's BRIGHT!:

Now I'm ready to start the background quilting. I've been practising! I discovered a cool way to mark curvy parallel lines. I used two water soluble markers and rubber banded them together! It works great- for lines further apart I can use something for a spacer- like a square eraser or folded tissue or something??? Anyway, I'm pretty proud of how well the FM'ing is coming along!

After seeing that I put on my old 33 rpm record of Janis Joplin. And tried to remember the 60's in S.F. Great job.

I thought the same thing Jan. Luck has nothing to do with it! Leslie has tons of talent....no luck needed unless it's for the bobbin to not run out in a bad place, etc. Best wishes for your replacement Leslie.

That free-motion is looking great Leslie. The quilt will look wonderful. Cheery is just what you need in the circumstances! It is bright and definitely eye-catching! Well done you. I was pleased to see those FM ideas. I really like the 'S's that become interlocking circles. I imagine you could actually quilt a straight line grid, instead of drawing it? I think I'll try that one. I do like it a lot. Thanks for sharing. . In message , Leslie & The Furbabies in MO. writes

wow Leslie the quilt is amazing!

Good luck with the hip replacement, it makes me a bit nervous, I think I'm going to end up needing one at a relatively young age, I'm only 27 now! I'm seeing someone soon to try and see if we can get to the bottom of what is causing hip pain now, it shouldn't be arthritis at this stage, my PT thinks it's a labral tear, which I've just discovered is something that pretty much always requires surgery, so I guess hip surgery might happen sooner rather than later.

Whew! I have one corner of the center panel quilted- photo added to the free motion quilting link. I must have been insane- I chose a grid pattern of quilting to start off and had to backtrack and duck and dodge around all those horses. Ugh! The remainder of the center panel will be a sampler of different quilting patterns. We're off to church for Maundy Thursday services and then on to quilting the next section- blazes! (And I need the luck more for not making silly choices, not running out of bobbin midway thru a pattern, not running over my fingers, etc. I'm pretty okay with my skills and accepting that I'm a beginner at this stuff! That is beautiful, Leslie! If I have to do hip replacement, I hope you will make me one of those!!! It would be worth doing hospital time to be able to fondle that quilt!
