Quilt Show pics - temporary

For those who care to look - these are pics from the quilt show in Melbourne (Victoria, Australia) last week held by Vic Quilters Inc. And before anyone asks, I checked and was told it was OK to use a camera. However, as I suspect that at least some of the quilts will be published I do not plan to leave these pics up on Webshots - just long enough for my rctq friends to take a look. So if you have time, take a look (there are 100 pics). I came away feeling terribly inadequate.

always some of the quilting did not show up well, but there were some great whole cloth-style quilts this year. My personal favourite quilt was 1503. It was labelled as having taken 17000hours. I am not sure which was scarier - that it took that long or that the maker kept track lol. But it was GORGEOUS!! That is all applique and IRL it looks like an illuminated manuscript. I wish I had a close up to show. I think it was based on an architectural feature (tile, carpet, similar?). The "white" lines are about 3/8" to give some scale.

I went on the first day and checked about photos, and then asked a friend to take some shots for me. So big "Thanks" to Krys.

Cheryl, what do you remember about 1533? It's the schools of fish parading in a stream of sunshine on the water. I would just dearly love to get myself real close to that one. Was it appliqued? Much embroidery? hand or machine? Was the background fabric hand-dyed or painted perhaps? How big is it? I know it is impossible to remember details about all of those beauties; just hoping you seriously inspected this one. Polly

You weren't kidding about 1503! That's working 12 hours a day, everyday for

4 years! Gosh, don't they put you in your place.......1531 caught my eye as well!

OK - I can't see any replies thru Outlook so I am accessing thru Google.

Wendy - 1531 was really unusual. The effect was achieved using bleach (painted on?) and wash dyes/inks. The "picture" design was then quilted.

Polly - as near as I can remember the background was hand dyed, and the appliqued fish were machine embroidered/free motion quilted. The free motion quilting was so close that it formed the "embroidered" lines. I don't remember if it was done on a domestic or long arm machine. Aren't those little fish just so cute? If you can free motion quilt you should be able to do similar on your SM.

I did notice that there were a more quilts this year that used coloured pencils and crayons to give shading to colours. Some of the stencil designs were done that way and then quilted. Quilters never cease to amaze me with their quest for new ways to add to their art.

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for the slideshow, I was unable to make the show this year and you made it possible for me to 'have a look'.

Wow, is all I can think of at the moment and inadequate compared to the talent.

Thanks Cheryl. I had to work everyday the show was on this year, so couldn't make it. Looks like I missed some beautiful quilts.

Piggybacking here. Thanks a lot for the pics, Cheryl! I've never seen an Australian quilt show before, and it was definitely worth the wait. :D
