is it OK to show a top in your guild's show and tell or do you guys limit yourselves to completed quilts? I am not too shy, but I haven't gathered the courage to do SNT yet... maybe now that I was voted evening secretary (though of course they misspronounced my last name!) I will finally dare - but should I wait until I have really finished a project or do you guys think I can show a top?
I show people tops all the time! (Not a member of a "proper" guild, just belong to 2 informal groups.) It's especially useful if you want to ask for advice. Makes a good escuse too. Roberta in D

It probably depends on your guild. The expectation in mine is that you will only show finished quilts at show and tell. The exception is if it is almost done and will be gone (to a gift recipient) before the next guild meeting. Mary
My guild is pretty much the same as Mary's -- finished quilts only unless they'll be gone to a recipient before the next meeting. Most of the unfinished ones we see are only missing a completed binding. We have a large guild and show and tell would last forever if very many people showed unfinished tops.
Wearables (often worn that night by the maker) Tote bags, pin cushions and other little things Tops Partially quilted quilts Quilted but not bound quilts (often these three fall into the category of "I'm sending this to my new grandchild and it will be gone by the next meeting") Finished quilts Quilts from thrift stores/rummage sales/auctions (look at what I found!) Featherweights (I saw this while on a walk through my neighborhood sitting by a trash can, etc)
Show a top!
marcella show and tell is my favorite part of guild meeting
Yes, that's exactly how it is in my guild too. And Marisa, don't feel bad. My last name is Pucci. Even in this town of Italians, mine gets mispronounced all the time. You can imagine. I'm gonna be Treasurer next year! No more newsletter, yahoo!
I don't have to imagine. I read it with the wrong pronunciations the first time, then re-read it with a different, possibly correct, pronunciations after reading the word "Italians". It's possible that both possible ways I've thought about are wrong though.
I haven't been in a guild for a while but the one I used to be in had everything at show and share, usually the ones who showed tops are what we called "Toppers"; quilters who love making the tops but not the finishing. I tend to be a topper because I love designing and sewing the tops. I can't really afford to have them machine quilted and as much as I love hand quilting, I am not very good at putting the quilt sandwich together. I do OK on smaller quilts but the larger tops I have made have been quilted by machine because I am so intimidated by the basting process. I don't have the floor space to lay out a large quilt and doing it in sections on my cutting table always ends up with puckers on the back!! Needless to say, I have several large tops waiting for the funds to be machine quilted!
Joan: Maybe some long arm quilters will BASTE your quilts for you. I would guess that is less cost than quilting. I think I might be a Topper, too, and I can't afford to send them out either. PAT in VA/USA
ah yes, the name game....I grew up with a very simple name: Sue Hill. Figured I would make my children's lives more "spicy" by giving them different and thrilling names like Jazmyn or Bastian....then I met and fell in love with - and eventually married - an Italian. Now I have to correct just about everyone - either with the spelling or the pronunciation! "That's capital D - i, capital N as in Nancy, a, p as in Peter, o, l, i..." and it's said "Dih Nap oh lee" (not dye-nap-oh-lye). SO...had to give the boys (have three of them now) names that could be said - and written - with ease. So, we've got Christopher, Alexander and Nicholas...however we went with the slightly different and thrilling nicknames: Christo, Xander and Nichos. Unfortunately, it REALLY bugs me when people call them Chris, Alex and Nick...those names aren't my sons! (It especially unnerves me when I go to our pediatricians office - where we've been going for the past 9+ years - and they still ask me: "Are you Mom?" and then call the boys by the more common nicknames...) Drives me batty! Oh, sorry, rambling on because I'm tired and my back hurts...just wanted to say: thanks for the pronunciation help Taria!
Sue > Taria like Maria is the way Pat. I spend a lot of time explaining
