Help finding SM needles for new 'puppy'

The only needles I can find to fit my new baby are ballpoint needles. They come in all sizes and all over the web and at Joann's, but only ballpoints. The machine requires a style 2045 needle. Is it possible to use another kind of needle in my machine? How do I find something that's not a ballpoint needle? And will it really matter horribly if I'm mostly sewing cotton rather than knits?

We need our authority here, Jennifer. Irene may not be watching us - but I think it could be possible that Sunny *could* damage the SM with the wrong needle. Could be that she would discombobulate the timing or something. However, I've shopped many times with Allbrands and Atlanta Thread and happily recommend them. Polly

I thought I recognized the number of your needle (from my old days of Singer sewing machines and specialized needles) - Allbrands have a variety of Singer machine needles including sharps for a good price - free shipping too in the US! I don't see why you couldn't try other needle types in your machine without doing any damage. If you are looking for a better price on the ballpoint type - Atlanta Thread & Supply sell them in bulk for $17 approx for 100 - I use these on my Singer serger and have no complaints with them. jennellh

Okies, I'm really stupid. The machine will take any 'universal' needle. I was just spazzing because of threading the needle from left to right rather than from front to back. Sorry. I now know better and am prepared to face the world again. Oh, and that little baby is running like a top since I oiled AND greased the whole thing. The little motor caps that should hold grease were burnt dry. I cleaned out the dried stuff and filled them with lubricant (special stuff for sewing machines) and after a bit of coaxing, it started to run perfectly.

I really would love to learn to repair old machines. It's so much fun. When I visit my sewing friends, the first thing I do is clean their sewing machines really well and change the needles. LOL They love it. I think I missed my calling.

Sunny: What model SM are you using? I am guessing a Singer. Yes? Be aware that Singer needles are not same length as other needles. HTH. Pat,, with new lap top, wireless connection, AND Windows 7, in Virginia (!!)

SY2045 is Singer's designation for the standard household sewing machine needle, ballpoint. If you want their branded packages for sharps, you want SY2020 needles.

If you're buying the same needle system from another company, you'll be buying needle systems marked 15x1, HAx1, or 705H. The reason for the needle system confusion is back in the distant and dark past where every sewing machine company wanted you to buy needles from them. Every home sewing machine (not serger) that I can think of in the last

45 years has used this needle system.
