Help finding needles for an old SM

My mother has her grandmothers old tredle machine. She is having trouble finding a needle for it. Everyone she has talked to says to use a regular needle. She can't get it to work. The needle in it is longer than a normal needle she says. She has tried them just to make sure it wouldn't still work and I guess it dosen't get the thread in there far enough so it doesn't work. She is supposed to look at it to tell me what it is for a machine so I can let you all know so you can help better. She thinks it is cottage something brand. Ring any bells? Anyone have any advise in finding a needle that would work in it??

TIA!!!

You might be able to get some information here once you find out the brand....

I have an old treadle that needs longer needles but the previous owner slid a bit of broken needle in the needle holder first (to fill up the empty space in the holder) and now it's possible to use a normal schmetz needle

the machine in question is a singer industrial cobblers treadle and can sew through rock (well almost LOL)

What brand of machine is it...Singer? White? New Home?

I wonder if the problem is, she's not putting the needle in correctly. Does she has a manual? If you can tell me the type of machine (brand, model number) I can help more. Or...post a picture someplace so we can see!

I'll tell her that. If she can't find what she wants she could atl east still use the machine this way. We'll see how much effort she wants to put into finding the proper needle or if she just wants to find something that works.

The company is something with cottage in it she thought. She was supposed to check and get back to me earlier this week but hasn't. I called and got her answering machine. So, when she calls me back, I can hopefully have her look while I'm on the phone with her and get me the company and the model (if there is one). I'll get back to you with more specifics when I get them.

The problem is not installtion. The problem is the needles are shorter when compared to the orginal one in the machine. She can get the orginal one installed and it works properly. It just has seen way too many miles of thread and needs replaced.

All right. Just talked to mom. It is a New Cottage. And it belonged to her grandmother. Mom was doing a rough guess of 80 - 100 years old depeding on when she first got it. HTH. Thanks Irene.

If you go to a store that specializes in selling sewing machines and ask, you will probably find that many of the better stores actually sell needles and leathers for treadle machines. If they don't have them in stock they can order them for you. I was able to purchase both!

Try a Singers needle, that might work

New Cottage was made by Davis, which was made by National, at least that's what I've found in doing some quick reading.

Some of the Davis machines take a needle that is two inches long.

Linda, at Relics, can probably help you find the right one:

Thanks for the suggestion Mary. She has spoken to a few different people and a SM shop I thought was one of them and they said a regular needle would work. I'll still pass it along to her anyways just in case. Maybe she should find a better one or one that does more with older machines. That one may not have delt much with treadle machines and didn't know perhaps?

Thanks. I'll pass that on to her.

Thanks for researching it for us Irene. I really appreciate it. I'll forward this info and the website to my mom.

She was joking last night about needing it up and running for the ice and snow that is supposed to hit this weekend. That way she can sew even if their power goes out. ; ) She's going to have to use Jessamy's trick if she wants to do that.
