Do any of you know what kind of SM needle has a spring at the top? I have several of these in a box that belonged to my friend. Also another thing that looks like a long sharp needle but the top is obviously a file of some kind. Any thoughts?

The long sharp needle with file at the top sounds almost like a sweater snag repair tool. You wrap the snagged part around the file-looking end, and pull the snag through to the back (inside) of the sweater.

The one with the spring allows machine embroidery to be done without a darning foot or a hoop.
I bought one ages ago but have never got round to using it. Hugs Shirley
It can also be used for free motion quilting without a darning or free motion foot. The special foot works better, though, and is less likely to break.

I tried the spring type needle for free motion quilting but didn't like it - probably because I didn't use a hoop. Without a presser foot the unhooped fabric moved too much. Allilson
