Old New Home SM

My neighbor is 71 and wants to sell her great aunt's treadle SM. We can find little on the net about this brand.

As the story goes, her great aunt wanted a new treadle so her husband ordered it from New Orleans. It had to be brought up river by boat, then off loaded onto a freight wagon and hauled overland to their farm in central Mississippi. This was about 1911.

It is in great condition, still has all the decals, no rust anywhere She is looking for a ballpark figure so she can put it in a consignment shop. I've already looked on ebay and can't find this brand at all.

Its a New Home treadle in its original cabinet. the cabinet has 3 drawers each side instead of the usual two. Has attachments in their original box but no manual. Am still looking for a model number. I'd buy it but I already have 5 machines so its off to the consignment shop.

Perhaps your neighbor would be willing to offer it to a local quilt quild to sell for her. I imagine a quilter would be pleased to give it a home. If it works and still has the attachments, even with no manual I think it should sell in the neighborhood of $50 to $75. (If I lived close I would certainly want it!)

I got a wonderful old machine one day when I went to a local quilt shop! An elderly gentleman had his late wife's machine to sell, but the shop didn't handle consignments at all. He was getting ready to leave, and I stopped him and asked about it. He said his wife had pieced many, many quilts on that machine, and he wanted another quilter to have it. I asked the price, and he just wanted it to go to a good home and said $30 would be plenty if I wanted to think about it. About 3 seconds later I took out my wallet, paid him $30, and we moved it from his car to mine. It's wonderful! He's happy, I'm happy, and I hope his wife knows that her much-loved machine is in a home where it is used and appreciated!

I bought a wonderful White treadle in a beautiful cabinet for $100.00 at an antique shop. The decals are in pretty good shape and it sews beautifully.

Just my experience,

I just stumbled across a New Home treadle on eBay- oops! I just noticed it's for the cabinet only- no machine. That seems a bit high for a cabinet only.... altho they make lovely living room or bedside tables without (or with) the sewing machine.

Maybe that can give you a bit of a guideline for pricing yours.

I did find one on ebay:

It didn't get any bids, so that tells you that $250 was a bit high. Of course, better pictures and more details might have helped. :)

FWIW, I paid $150 a couple of years ago for a working 1911 Singer VS treadle with cabinet. The seller originally wanted $200 and didn't get any bids. The cabinet did have some surface water damage, which is probably why no one else bid on it.

This is a great SM, if I remember correctly. My mother had one, and my grandmother could sew up a storm on that New Home treadle! Two of my sisters learned to sew on it, too. I wish I lived close, I would love to see it and (if I could afford it) bring it home with me!
