Visited the new quilt store in Arlington Heights, IL yesterday (Quilter's Destination). It is easy to find. Take the Palatine Road exit off of 290/53 and go east to Rand Road (less than 2 miles). Turn south (right) on Rand Road and the store is on your right within the first two blocks. It is in a strip mall so there is parking out front.
The store owner hasn't found her niche yet. She has a little of everything which translates to not much of any one thing. She plans to grow her baby section which is already full of the cute things if you are looking for young pastel baby. She also has a section of Northwoods (think bears and trees). That look doesn't do much for me but a pheasant feather print in two colorways was calling. This would fit in many masculine quilts and not scream Northern Minnesota.
If this were the only store in the area it wouldn't be worth the drive but with Prints Charming II just around the corner it makes for a nice destination (pun intended). From my direction it is easier to visit the new shop first and then take Palatine road west to Plum Grove Road. Turn south on Plum Grove Road and Prints Charming II is within a mile. Prints Charming II has depth in most areas except Civil War fabrics which is fine because my local store, The Quilt Merchant, specializes in Civil War.
I love my local stores but sometimes we need new inspiration. A road trip can really get the juices flowing. We in the Chicago area are so fortunate to have about 15 stores within a hour drive. If you are in the mood for an all day adventure you can drive north to Wisconsin and find many more. So much fabric, so little time.
