help needed on next quilt project

I am getting ready to start on "Clowning Around" version 2. You can see it here:

Due to arthritic hands, I want to do this on the machine. Does anyone have advice on how to make the stitching look as nice as the sample? I have not done anything like this before. The instructions just tell how to do the applique version. I have emailed the designer with my question, but I thought I would ask for some other ideas as well. I am pretty sure she did hers by hand.

As close as I can tell, it looks either like a very narrow satin stitch, or a triple stretch stitch. Gen

Debra, I've studied your Clown and it seems to me that he is done with a heavyweight variegated thread of primary colors. Do you know how to couch with your SM? You could zigzag the thread in place with an invisible thread such as MonoPoly or Invisafil. There are a lot of starts and stops on the clown. That's easily solved by threading the tail in a big eyed needle and pulling it through to the back. Practice with any heavy thread and decide which foot holds everything in place the best. I think the project would take some time but yes, you can do it by SM. Polly
