I just finished putting together one of the Warm Wishes tops from Quiltmaker magazine and want to put on one border instead of the two they use but don't know what size to use. Do I just add the the two together and use that for the total width? The blocks are 5 1/2" finished. Is there a formula to use to know what size borders I need? TIA

A guideline:
Perhaps your local library has a book or two on quilt borders; you could also do ask a search engine for "Quilt Borders" -- all kinds of interesting things show up, mostly about quilts.
