Not sure if the 'black lines' in the water are...... Original 'ink/pen lines' or in the fabric itself but I sure like them.

To whiten without covering all the underlying color, applique a bit of white or grey silk organza. You could probably cut out a bow wave in the organza, dab some Fray Check on the cut edges, then simply hold it in place with your quilting stitches, and use the stitches to add definition.
