Thank you. Now I can 'see' the embroidery. Sure appreciate it.

Not sure if the 'black lines' in the water are...... Original 'ink/pen lines' or in the fabric itself but I sure like them.

To whiten without covering all the underlying color, applique a bit of white or grey silk organza. You could probably cut out a bow wave in the organza, dab some Fray Check on the cut edges, then simply hold it in place with your quilting stitches, and use the stitches to add definition. Will look into that. Just to give you an idea of the effect I am after, view:

is an artist's original idea of the ship which I started from then had to throw away as thete are aspects which are different from the actual ship. It is the effect of bow wave and wake I am after. Many thanks for all the suggestions sent up to now.
