Holiday quilting warning

You might want to pre-wash any fabrics to be used for holiday stitching if you want them to be merry and bright. The brilliant reds and greens I used for placemats and table runner bled and faded to muddy toast. Probably this could happen with any other color plan if you are into a magenta and silver color scheme or whatever calls you. While I am not a card-carrying pre-washer, do file this warning in the back of your brain to avoid my 'dragged behind a covered wagon' decor. The gators don't seem to mind but I do wish I'd known what my creations were going to look like before I put any precious time into them. From Ho Ho to ho hum. Polly

Oh no!!!! What an awful thing to have happen. I can understand your disappointment......I am not a pre-washer either but will take your experience to heart when I begin those holiday gifts.

Actually, just last night I was thinking that it is almost September and September is almost December!!! Yikes!!!! I'd better start my holiday gifts today!!!!!

Oh, I just love that last sentence, Polly. If I thought I would remember it correctly, I would adopt it for a catchphrase. It would cover a multitude of situations >g< Thank you for this. . In message , Polly Esther writes

Yikes!!! I knew there must be a reason I'm compulsive about washing my stash. Thanks for the warning, I'm about to start the pink/silver poinsettia pillows!!

I am not normally a pre-washer, but "seasonal" fabrics (any season) are something I tend to be pretty suspicious of.

So sorry this caught you but I am sure that even "muddied" the decor will be lovely!

Well, there's this. I won't be concerned with a turkey gravy dribble or a cranberry sauce stain. Polly

Yep. I had the same thing happen here in Oz a couple of years ago. I had some really pretty fabric with gold stars and candles on it. Luckily I pre-washed before using it cos it lost all its rich green and red, fading badly and losing much of the gold pattern. Guess that will teach me to buy el-cheapo fabric. I usually pre-wash everything so at least it didn't spoil my Xmas gifts. Have a good day

Oh, I did prewash mine. I made a table runner for my family room coffee table. Turned out wonderful. It was ecru, burgundy and hunter green. My DH decided to light the three-wick mulberry scented candle that was placed strategically in the center motif of the runner. This particular section of the runner was mostly - you guessed it - ecru. Well, the candle was in a very decorative dish which was (apparently) not deep enough to hold the melted wax so it overflowed the container and covered most of the ecru section of the runner staining it for all eternity.

Oh, I still use it and remind the DH every Christmas! Now, I have a wider container for the candle and I cover the stain with greenery. I cringe at the thought of the stain, but I can put up with it for two weeks.

And just because you said that, it will be one of those useable creations that will never get dirty. No one will spill gravy or cranberry sauce on it! Murphy's law ya know! lol

Can't you just hear me screaming "Don't eat in the dining room, those are my good placemats!" ? Yeah. Like that's going to happen. I don't think anybody would hear me and strongly doubt they'd pay me much heed anyway. So it is. Polly

Yep - these ones will be indestructible and stain proof!!!

Stupid newbie question: so I gather the cloth manufacturers have no responsibility in this regard--that's it's totally caveat emptor?

If'n we did, she'd send her gators after us...... I need them to keep the Med ppl in line so I'll refrain.

That pretty well covers it, Jean. I suppose if a yard or two was dyed with something that ate out the innards of your washer, they 'might' give you your money back - but the time and loved wasted would just be gone. And you can spill turkey gravy on my placemats if you want to. Polly
