I dyed yesterday

Shelley Stokes from Cedar Canyon Textiles is speaking at our guild today. Yesterday she did a workshop on "Beginning Hand-dyed Fabric". It was interesting to see how things came out. I came home with 26 fat quarters of hand-dyed fabric -- 12 FQs of a color wheel progression, 6 FQs of a light-to-dark sequence, 7 FQs of a complements progression, and

1 FQ of red overdyed with black. I wanted my light-to-dark to be a bluish green, but is much more blue. My complements progression is reddish orange to blue with a slight greenish cast. For that one we started with two complementary colors and then changed the proportions of each color.

I enjoyed the workshop but am not sure that I'll ever be doing any at home. It does make me appreciate the work that goes into dying and therefore the cost to buy hand-dyed fabric :)

There are some things that I simply leave to someone who's good at it. Except for Easter eggs and a faded black slip, my dying experience is quite limited. However - that does sound like fun. Did you dye any fingers or shoes? Polly

Hi Julia Exactly what I said to Cheryl a moment ago in another thread. It is a messy job but some girls love doing it. After doing 2 one day workshops the other week I think one really needs an art studio with running water to do it successfully at home without taking over the laundry. I did keep clean though with an apron and disposable latex gloves. I ended up with 20 FQ and I can't believe it was all my own work LOL

I agree re comment about purchased fabric now!

Better than me Polly! My experience is pretty much limited to pink socks and underwear!

That's pretty funny for probably everyone but your poor DH Danielle Taria

I found a terrific buy on red flannel just after Christmas and offered to all the fellows in the family to tint their undies a precious shade of pink. No takers. My glorious yards and yards of red flannel had to be washed alone. Ah well. Polly

Actually, he didn't mind much. He figured that the only person who would see the pink underwear was him, and possibly me, so it wasn't that big of a deal. He also said that if anyone would make fun of his pink socks, he'd just tell them that it wasn't his fault they were so behind in style fashion trends!

A keeper?

I think so!

No shoes, no floors or tables. I wore rubber gloves while working with the dye and while rinsing the dyed fabric under the faucet. I didn't put them on when I put the dyed and rinsed fabric into the washer. That was a mistake -- I ended up with slightly dyed fingers, but they look pretty good now.
