I Finally got my Featherweight!

A friend of ours does house clean-outs and that sort of thing frequently. I asked him to keep his eyes open for a featherweight and explained what I was looking for. He told me quite a while ago that he had found one and would bring it with him next time he came through town. Well, I've been waiting very patiently. He's staying at our home dog sitting while we go on vacation (leaving in about an hr.). I asked if he wouldn't mind bringing the machine with him this time. Well! I think the wait was really worth it! I haven't even plugged it in to see if it works but I'm pretty sure it will. It is PRISTINE! The case has a little handle wear but otherwise in great condition. There are no original manuals or accessories but the machine is GORGEOUS! Beautiful and shiny, seems to have all it's parts. Per the serial number it was made June 11, 1937 in Elizabeth, NJ - one of 20,000 made in that number range! I'm sooooo excited. I'm getting ready to grab some piecing that I have to do for a top I'm working on and taking it with me on vacation. After I glue some body parts together tonight while attempting a 'bikini' wax, I think I'll probably spend the rest of the night playing with my new toy. And the best part is, he only wants $20-25 for the machine! Somehow I can't be quite that greedy. Now I just have to figure out what to really pay him for the machine! Any hints or clues?

Well, I paid $350 for mine. Depending on what you can afford - you might offer him $200. In case some day he finds out what one is really worth, you'll have paid about half and way more than her rquested.

A very nice payment would be a quilt! You can make a nice simple Warm Wishes quilt in a sofa size. I just tried to find the link for this easy pattern. I remember it was a freebie at QNM or McCall's. Maybe someone else will have the link available. meantime, conga rats on the FW!

I have fallen in love with this pattern and am in the process of putting the binding on a baby quilt made from it. I also have two throw size quilts in the works for wedding gifts needed for late fall and early winter.

Here's the link:

Thanks, Alice! I hope K sees your post. I love this pattern too. My QoV bee has made several Quilts of Valor using this pattern. My church bee made one recently to farewell our pastor. We used some left over blocks to make a mat quilt for his lovely dog!

I'm definitely liking the quilt idea! I'll take a closer look at the Warm Wishes pattern once I get home. His only concern was that I was not going to re-sell the machine. That would have made a difference to him on price he charged me, I'm sure. Currently on vacation with a VERY SLOW dial-up connection that is making me CRAZY. This is the first time in days I've had a chance to look at the group. Since it takes soooo long to load messages and/or post, I've only looked at a couple. Might have to wait till the weekend the really catch up!

Not sure if the machine sews yet but I think it does - there is a test strip under the needle. This vacation is not being very conducive to much sewing. Lots of eating and boating but not much sewing!
