My batting needs quilting every 8 inches. I channel quilted every 6 inches. Do I need to to quilt accross the quilt too

Yes. At least 8 inches in each direction. So horizontal and vertical channels will do it.

Not necessarily. I've done it without the horizonal quilting and they lasted for decades.
