Katrina quilts

So...how many of us are doing this? And have we each set a goal or are we all just going to use as much stash as we can??

Larisa, finished 5, fabric for at least 10 more...but not enough batting for all of those, so I'm not using any in some (backing of fleece or flannel).

It feels so good to be doing SOMETHING, doesn't it?

I sent 2 that I already had on hand. I will try to do more on my days off next week.

I have 10 cut out, 6 completely sewn and quilted, and am shooting for

30 finished quilts- got stalled out today with some housecleaning- ugh. I plan to use some of my flannel for the baby blankets Marcella (I think it was her) posted sewing directions for constructing. I wanted to make some sturdy tote bags, too, but couldn't find any inexpensive, stout fabric. I will check for fabric for tote bags at Joann's when we go to Springfield next week. Also need another bolt of Warm & White.....

Today I had to go to the doctor (stupid cold turned into bronchitis) so I didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted. I was contacted this morning and asked to work in the Astrodome to serve meals to people so I will have to go to volunteer training for that on Sunday. I will get to spend all day tomorrow sewing on quilts, the kids go to their dads for visitation. I only got two done yesterday between phone calls, emails and trying to liason between school PTO, friends, neighbors and evacuees.

I also went by JoAnn's on way home from doctors and got machine needles, curved needles and some "Clearance" flannel to back denim quilts tomorrow that won't need batting. The girl checking out today was really sweet, told her about quilts for Katrina victims so she used one of my 40% off coupons on the flannel, even though it was already on clearance! WTG JoAnn's!

Tonight I rest, eat, sleep and take drugs in hopes of waking up tomorrow with a lot more energy than I had today! LOL But in the grand scheme of things, there are so many, in so much need that this silly cold/bronchitis just seems like an obnoxious inconvenience.

Great work Larisa and thanks for posting your progress, you're a great team member and you help me stay motivated!

Hugs, Tina

I bought enough things today for 2 hygiene kits. I'll buy more things after I get paid next Friday.. I hate scraping by before each paycheck, and yet it usually happens. I have 1 baby-szied quilt top waiting to be quilted. I think I can make another couple from the poly batting I have on hand I have used all my morning time before work and evening time after work to finish this black and bright colours baby quilt for my manager at work. I think I can be more productive for things that take less assembly.

Well, it's not like I can paint with the children playing around, and Mother got her late last night, so I needed something to do to stay awake....the floor is littered, and at least I feel useful for the moment.

My son and I packed up 8 hygiene kits and I even had a box that they all fit into. We'll take them to the post office tomorrow.

I found three flannel baby blankets tucked in my sewing room for the next round of babies but I plan to donate those as well as a kid quilt sample from my kids camp class.

My LQS is having a few work days to make quilts for the IQF drive. The shop will take care of shipping them over the next few months - or as long as they are needed, so I will take the baby blankets and quilt there.

Also, I saw that they are turning the Brown convention center in Houston into a shelter. The press release said events will be cancelled. Wonder what will happen to the big quilt show? Think they can move it someplace else?

I cut fabric and bought batting for about 10. I finished 2 and made 8 fleece blankets. I took the remaining fabric and batting to the quilting group at the senior center and asked if they could help me. They dropped their projects and started spreading out the layers. So I guess I'll have to round up more fabric!

I also want to get Tyler's Hug top ready for quilting this weekend. Busy holiday.

Prayers for our troops, Katrina victims, and all in need.

I'm not making blocks. Tonight I pulled some 12 inch blocks I received for hugs last December. I will join them so they don't look too hap-hazard. And I pulled some pieces that will make crib size quilts or larger. I'm making utility not appearance.

I don't have a large stash.....mostly fat quarters and smaller pieces. But I have managed to piece simple squares and I have 2 baby size, a child size, and I am working on an adult size now. I have fabric for another child and maybe another adult right now. Hope to have these all quilted by the first of next week. I will try to make as many as my pocketbook will allow, the need isn't going to go away anytime soon.

Linda-

I am not piecing my quilts at all. I'm just taking whatever size pieces of fabric I have for the top (approx. 45X36 to 45X90) and using them whole. I'm only piecing together fabrics when I don't have a large enough piece to be usable- which should not be many. I'm going strictly for quantity and speed- not beauty. But, then, I don't buy ugly fabrics! LOL

I made 3 quillows and have flannel cut out to make 2 baby quilts, but have to go get batting this weekend. Am going to see what I can find to make some totes. Would like to send down a least 1/2 dozen of those, and some hygiene products.

I remembered tonight that I have a tote full of corduroy. My DIL might be getting a major sewing lesson this weekend.

If you have time, in Springfield, Leslie, you could try curtain/upholstery shops. They often get rid of whole books of samples, if the line has been discontinued. They also have huge remnant bins, in my experience? This fabric would be good for bags - and pretty much the right size! (The sample books I mean). . Patti - this is an excellent recommendation. I called the pastor of our church yesterday because last summer, he received donated fabric swatches and samples from one of the local outlets. I was in hopes maybe he had some leftovers (his church made duffle bags out of them for the homeless/street people). He told me he not only had some leftover but that he would call and see if they had anymore.

I was going to post about this when I received everything - but just so you all know, and if anyone in the Houston area is sewing and would like some of this - Houston Design Center is offering us ALL of their samples/swatches and leftover sections of fabrics from past projects.

Some of these are kind of heavyweight (upholstery fabric) so I don't know how much of those we can use - but in last years batch, I found a gazillion that were already the perfect size for just sewing together to make "scrappy" quilts.
