Look Ma! No hands

Hmmmm. What's that saying about the apple not falling far from the tree? I think we might have enjoyed your mother as much as we enjoy you!

LOL! You just described *my* mom! 5'4", weighs 100 lbs soaking wet (durn her for being able to stay thin!!), softest voice you ever heard, but I tell you ... when she speaks we ALL listen!!

All my life, people have have remarked on my "ma'ams," "sirs," "pleases" and "thank yous" ... and my response is typically that my momma taught me to be polite, end of story. And that just being 2000 miles apart wouldn't stop her from jumpin' on a plane, and smacking me upside the head if'n I forgot a "ma'am" or a "sir!"

My mom's a true Steel Magnolia!! :)

*sigh* I didn't think I could miss her (and my dad) more. I was wrong. :(

Good Lord!! I would've thought that the pain would have been enough to force her to get the thing taken out!! My mind frankly reels at the thought of something gettin' deeper and deeper into any body part of mine!!! And I'd suspect that that happenin' to a foot - what with walkin' and all - would be especially painful!!!

Now I have the heebie-jeebies!! Erk!! I'm going to go get some chocolate until the oogies go away! ;)

Hugs!!

Oh well suppose somethings being done about it now... hopefully, hope you get better soon, Bunny Hugs Elly

Polly, they were a very strange family - I lost my temper with the youngest one many years ago, because he was so disrespectful to his mother. There were 4 kids - everyone of them was disrespectful to their mom. The parents divorced when the kids were young (Husband tried to push his wife down the back stairs, that was the last straw.) She was such a nice lady, but had no clue when it came to discipline and parenting.

Indeed, INDEED! I'm as stunned as Polly. I had three teenaged boys that towered over me and not *letting* me tell them what must be done was not on the agenda. When my voice dropped to a quiet whisper they KNEW all negotiations were off. One boy told me later, as an adult, that when my eyes were at half mast, the right eyebrow elevated and my voice barely audible; death was eminent and only blind, mute obedience could save him, ~wicked chuckle~. A stony stare and gentle clearing of the throat could bring an entire Cub Scout Den to frozen attention. That mother obviously never read "The Parenting Manual". Must be the same woman I know, whom I asked why she was spending her day off cleaning her teenagers' rooms....."They don't like to clean their rooms." Sheeeeeeeeesh!

You sound like you're in much worse shape than I am. I think I'm on the road to recovery now. I even managed to make it through my one hour Yoga class this morning and didn't even have a coughing spell! (We'll see how I do at tomorrow's cardio-strength class, which is a lot more aerobic. I may have to cut back on that one a bit.) My chest doesn't feel nearly as tight as it has the past few days. I hope the antibiotics will take care of you! (Been there, done that, many times!!!)

Polly, that was my reaction, too! The mother sounds somewhat wimpy.

I did that when I was 14, sewing up a real cute shorts and top set in red, yep used red thread! I was using Mom's portable on my bedroom floor. I was more nimble then. The needle bent, broke, and stayed in my right index finger. I went to my Dad and asked him to pull it out with his pliers, he said no it was off to the hospital. Got shots, x-rays and a cute intern, who removed it.

When I was a new quilter, I sometimes held pins in my mouth. At that time, DS2 was taking the Middle School Shop Class. He chided me for my foolish practice, saying that the Shop teacher did not permit anyone to hold nails in mouth because of the oil and /or dirt on the item. That cured me ... now I always use a magnetic dish to hold my pins. If I don't have one handy, I use a small bowl. Former smokers can put ashtrays to good use as pin receptacles. Carolyn: You can add me to your list of sewists who REALLY put themselves into the work! I sewed my finger to kitchen curtains, back in the day, in Texas!

Yep, it all goes right in my mouth- nails, screws, screwdrivers, tapes, caulk tubes, paint brushes, seam rippers, needles, pins and food. Lots and lots of food..... It's just so big and so handy for holding things!

Nails could be a much worse risk - you used to get cadmium-plated ones. You won't get anything that toxic on sewing needles or pins.

Maybe the paraffin kept the nails from rusting? That's the only thing I can think of- maybe they slide into the wood better? But I would think the wood would scrape off the paraffin as the nail went into it. I dunno.

I thought I was almost done beng sick, then for some reason I read needles as nipples. In this post that was odd enough for me to go back and look again. I _must_ be feverish.....

Rustproofing.

If you're not going to use it up pretty quick, a box of plain steel nails will tend to rust eventually just from the moisture in the air, especially if it's kept in a garage/workshop/cellar type environment which may be damper than inside the house.....
