Making Fabric Rings to go with quilted placemats

I think I'm losing my mind, but I can't think of a good way to making napkin rings. I have some extra fabric after quilting several table placemats and I thought it might be cute to make some matching fabric rings. I don't want to use tubes of empty toilet paper, rather maybe just the fabric and some stabilizer. Anyone ever dunk the fabric in Stiffy to harden them up? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I just want them sturdy enough so they go onto the napkins easy.

Thanks!

I've seen ones done with stabiliser (leave-in facing or some of that leave-in foundation stuff) and then pretty button for closure (the button could be functional or not!).

But I didn't make them myself...

Make them stiff with a sturdy iron on fusible and a Velcro closure or make them soft and tie in a pretty knot or bow?

braided/plaited fabric somehow. if the fabric is thick enough should make an easy ring out of that. tying off the unplaited ends into a bow perhaps? sorry, just thinking outloud. jeanne

A long time ago (before I was a quilter :) I made a set of placemats from pre-quilted fabric -- really easy, just cut to shape and bind. I cut some of the quilted scraps into strips, added binding, and sewed the ends together to make rings. With the quilting, batting, and binding, they had enough "body" to make nice rings.

Howdy!

Oh, sure, you're losing your mind and you want to blame it on quilting!?!

Here are a couple of cute ideas:

If using the fabric stiffener, Stiffy or white glue, wrap the wet fabric strips around a large dowel rod or narrow rolling pin until the fabric is dry.

Good luck!

I made a set of Seminole placemats, and then 'just for fun' made napkin rings too. Because they were Seminole piecing there were many seams, so, with a stiffener and backing, they were quite firm enough to use. I just oversewed the ends together - for flatness. The napkins don't slip out of them, so there is no need to have them as tight as the slippery metal rings. They look very nice all together! . In message , snipped-for-privacy@sbcglobal.net writes

What about Timtex - the stuff they use in those fabric bowls/boxes/post cards? I've used that and it is plenty stiff enough to go over the napkins but still be washable.
