My quilting buddy is moving.....

My best friend here, my quilt buddy, the one who inspired me and told me I could make "art, is moving over the mountains to the West side. It's not the other side of the world, but considering how seldom I get outside city limits it might as well be. They just found out today. It's a good move for them in every way. But I will miss her horribly and I don't know where I will find another person with such grace to share my little projects and my big hopes.

If you have a good quilting friend, cherish her/him. In this economy you never know what will happen next week. So everybody go have coffee/ tea/something a smidge stronger and toast my dear friend Tish.

Sunny,

I'm so sorry. You've written about Tish many times, so we know what a great friend she is.

About 23 years ago, my BFF moved from California to Atlanta. After a few years, they then moved to upstate New York. I was heartbroken when she moved, but we made a vow to see each other at least once a year & we planned fun trips to get together. We tried to find places to meet that were "halfway points" for both of us. Sometimes we went to each other's homes. After 23 years, we are still BFF & now she has moved back to California - unfortunately, it's Southern California & I'm in Northern California, but we are as close today as we were 23 years ago. We talk often & I sometimes forget that she lives so far away. I hope that you & Tish can find a way to keep the friendship strong & keep it alive!

I'm sorry for your sake that she's moving, Sunny! However, my best quilting buddy lives a four-hour drive away, and we stay in touch via email and telephone. It's not as good as what you've had, but it is possible! :)

Isn't Skype wonderful, Susan? :) That's what my DT and I use, too; she lives in France, but we can see each other almost every day and show each other what we're quilting -- or whatever else happens to come up in conversation.

Others have given useful suggestions for maintaining a long distance friendship. If you want to add another local quilting buddy, look for opportunities at your quilt shop, local guild, community center, church, synagogue, etc. Those places often have small intimate quilting bees where you might find a kindred soul. Good luck, Pat in Virginia
