need idea

For those who don't know, Pillbug is almost

4 and autistic.

Pillbug does not like toys, only real things. DH requested on his photography board for someone to send us a broken camera because Pillbug has always had a fascination for cameras. A wonderful man in Canada sent us a camera, two stuffed toys, and a beautiful letter. Pillbug loves the camera - for all that he does not pay attention and follow instructions, he learned quickly how to wind and click.

I want to make something quilty (probably a wall hanging) for this man, but don't know what. I found an appliqué template for a camera, but don't really want to do that. Are silhouettes particularly photography-ic? I'm not coming up with any good ideas...

Thanks, Anita

What about....... a silhouette of Pillbug playing with a camera and a person taking a photo of him. Does that make sense? Oooh I can see it now - I reckon it'd be gorgeous.

Wow, Sharon. That's such a fine idea I can hardly stand it. If Anita made the nice guy a wall hanging, chances are slim to none that she could possibly guess what manner of decorating would please him. A picture of her Pillbug enjoying the camera would be a thank you note worth more than 1,000 words. There are a few thank-yous here that came with pictures of the recipient enjoying the gift. They are precious to me and I treasure them every one. Polly

What an interesting idea, Anita. I'm sure the chap will be thrilled. It seems to me that the elite in the photography world love black and white photographs more than any other. A silhouette would fit in beautifully with this; and Sharon's idea of having Pillbug in it is terrific. If you make him using an 'old-fashioned' camera with one of those extending lens bits, so that it is quite obvious what it is just from the silhouette, I think that would help with the overall picture. Does he have a cat he loves? (Pillbug or the man who sent him the camera). I ask, because cats makes marvellous and easy to recognise silhouettes. I don't want to make it too complicated for you, but Pillbug could be taking the photo of the cat - or something like a tree or flower? Anything which is easy to see.

I just looked up Google, Images: 'silhouettes of children' and 'silhouettes of animals'. There are lots that you could look at and get shapes, if you need them (I don't know how your drawing is! I always have to use Google, Images!)

Have fun. This sounds like a lovely project. Hope you let us know what you decide and how it goes. . In message , Irrational Number writes

I agree, though I'm no expert. But another consideration is that this sort of quilt would go with almost anyone's décor, thus ensuring that the recipient would truly appreciate it.

Oooooh, yes! :D

LOL! I don't appliqué (at least, not by hand), but I'd have to do the same thing. My artistic skills are on such a low level that my former students used to giggle even at my stick figures!

And don't forget to show us a picture! :D

Oh, and here I was going to suggest a maple leaf wall-hanging...I've got a great paper-pieced pattern....after all, he is Canadian!

everyone's tastes are so different, I think I might skip the camera idea and do something seasonal, though you'd have to figure out what was traditional in Canada, then send photos of Pillbug and the camera.

What if you took a picture of Pillbug playing with the camera (maybe taking pictures of the toys), did a photo transfer to fabric of that to make it into a wall hanging. You could make the photo black & white and transfer it to a 'sepia' toned cotton (coffee dipped white fabric works for this) and use a black oval for the picture matte and then make a wide binding of whatever to be the frame. You wouldn't have to worry about black fabric running since it most likely wouldn't be washed. Stitch in the ditch around the inside of the oval and between the 'matte' and frame and make the binding 'frame' of perhaps a dark wood toned batik and maybe some sort of quilting on the 'frame' if you wanted. I'd keep it simple; Pillbug and the camera are the stars to shine here. JMHO but I think that would be a very special keepsake thank-you for a very thoughtful and kind photographer. If you don't have the where with all to do a photo transfer to fabric some fabric stores will do that for you. I know our Kinko's does that here as well. The wall hanging would have sort of a classic photograph look. Think of this as a piece of art, not 'decor'. A photographer is an artist and as artists say...."if you love the art it doesn't need to match the sofa". This would be a relatively simple project but send a very clear message; Pillbug is truly enjoying this man's thoughtful gift. You could even stitch a pocket onto the back of the wall hanging to tuck a personal thank you card and perhaps enclose a few more pictures of Pillbug discovering the joys of his new camera.

Just a thought, Val

Fabulous. I'm leaning towards something like this!

This is exactly correct. I know nothing about this man, but that he went out of his way to be kind to my son. I want this to be something that he doesn't have to hang up, but it would be cool anyway.

Yep. These are people who still love film and analog photography in general.

I could do this! DH has some old large format cameras (the ones with the extending lenses and you need a darkcloth to focus)...

I probably will put some subtle maple leaves in the border or something.

Ah... and this would be easier than a silhouette (which, now that I've done more research, is not as easy as I thought! Slits and slivers and thinking backwards...).

;) I love this!

I like this idea.

No matter what, I have to send photos of Pillbug playing with the camera. It's just too cool to see.
