Need speed

A house burned down two nights ago. The family -- with three young children -- barely made it to safety. Their two little dogs did not. The home is a total loss. They have nothing, no clothes, no place to live, nothing. I couldn't sleep last night. Got out my "kid" stash and cut out blocks for a quick and simple little toddler quilt. Today was another bad day -- I've had a long string of them for the past couple weeks. I still don't understand why I can't use my hands when it's my face and head that hurt, but there you go. Tomorrow will be a new day and I need to be able to work tomorrow. A friend is coming over and together we are going to finish at least this one quilt. The goal is two toddler quilts and five Christmas stockings with a few little goodies. We're birthing the little quilts. Nothing elegant, but they'll be warm and comforting. The local Red Cross is collecting for the family and the community is usually generous. But this time of year the giving is stretched thin. And there have been layoffs. So please send me some good energy for tomorrow and speed, too. Prayers, candles, incantations, white light, positive energy, I'm open to all.

Thanks, Sunny

Here's a good reason for all of us to keep on going with a quilt that is not turning out like our vision. Bad weather, it seems, always triggers an urgent need for a quilt that can warm and cover with hugs. If you're making a quilt that seems to have no future, keep on going. A blanket can get somebody warm - but a quilt says somebody really cares. And Sunny - I don't know diddly about doing incantations but we will pray that God will guide you. We're just sure you'll find a way to help. If your hands aren't working, your heart surely is. Holding you up in our prayers, Polly

Sending it your way! I don't think anything physical is going to make it in time for Christmas, but let me know if you need anything.

Sunny, prayers are coming your way for both your health and the wellbeing of the family affected. I'm just so sorry your hands don't always work as well as that big heart of yours!I know how frustrating that must be for you. I hope today is a better day for you.

Sending healing energy to your hands, face, and head, and good thoughts for the family you're helping. Their plight is heart-breaking, but at least all the humans in their family lived.

Over the past three days of bitter cold, dipping below 0 F over night in some places, three homes have burned to the ground. All three were people living in older homes who couldn't afford to pay heating bills and were using space heaters. This is just our little Valley here. I can only assume the same is being repeated all over the country as people try to manage both financial disaster and blinding cold. Please, look through your homes. If you find anything of good use (not the torn, stained stuff) such as quilts you no longer need, good bedding, etc. please take this to your local Red Cross. Don't wait for a burnout in the middle of the night. Red Cross is the agency that coordinates efforts to help people who lose their homes in disasters. If your local food bank is facing bare shelves this year and more requests for help, think about giving them a little bit of your stash fund. Just a little. Winter really is harder when money is scarce.

In the alternative, you could call your church and see what their pantry might be lacking. Could be Oreos, BandAids or puppy biscuits. No kidding. Maybe diapers. I'm glad you mentioned that, Sunny. We have a shopping trip planned and we'll call our own pantry to see what their needs are. We will always be grateful for the Red Cross help post-Katrina but the United Way and the churches can sometimes by-pass the red tape and help faster. Polly
