OT and not: Quilter's Newsletter

I have subscribed to this magazine since 1989 - almost 19 years. I recently was going to renew my subscription, but then changed my mind after sending the postcard back in for a two-year renewal. I sent them a letter indicating my change, and to cancel my subscription. Never heard from them, which is normal, since the only time I would hear is at renewal time.

You can only imagine what went through my mind when I received a collection letter from North Shore Collection Agency in Westbury, New york, demanding payment. Of course, the phone number listed on the letter is automated. So, a letter is going out in this morning's mail.

While I have seen a lot of changes in this publication over the years and was an avid reader of their articles, this has just got to take the cake.

Thank you for letting me vent, back to our regularly scheduled quilting, Ginger in CA hmmm should this now be TMWLTH [the magazine we love to hate]?

I hope you are keeping copies of everything!

When my father died, my mother and the estate's lawyer sent a letter to American Express cancellling his account, which had no balance and no fee due at that time. Well, AmEx continued it anyway, sent a bill for the annual fee, and ignored her notes that the account was closed on such-and-such date. Finally, they sent it to collection! My mother was distraught, and the estate was closed by that time and the lawyer paid, so my mother authorized me to handle it for her. A rather terse phone call -- I actually got a real person on the line!

-- and a letter ended the problem, especially after I threatened to sue for violation of the state's collection laws. At the same time I cancelled my personal account with AmEx, and they kept sending me please-continue letters. Finally they called me at the office, and as luck would have it they had to get through 2 secretaries to get me on the line. I told the gentleman I cancelled because of what I considered their unconscionable as well as unlawful actions toward a widow which required intervention by an attorney. He said it simply could not be true and that I was surely mistaken, so I told him the widow was my mother and I was the attorney. And that ended it! Occasionally it really is useful to be able to use a fancy letterhead and put "Attorney at Law" with a signature.

Good luck with getting a response other than a lot of dunning letters. I called the number INSIDE the magazine...talked with a live person.. sent a registered letter to the person she told me to. Hadn't heard from them in 4 years. Got a RENEWAL NOTICE a coupla weeks ago at this address. I have NOT subscribed to any magazines since we left B'splat..until June of this year when Mr. Joe signed me up for American Quilter. They sold my name as it was misspelt the same as the AQS magazine. I'm not pleased.

I gave up on QNM several years ago. It's really changed- and not for the better IMNSHO. I'm surprised they didn't just cut off your magazines and leave it at that. Not so nice people- for quilters.....

Good luck dealing with those collection creeps. Yuck. :-(

i had a similar experience with a teen magazine for my daughter, i received these magazines at my new address under my old married name. i never ordered it. i figured i'd let the subscription run out and that would be the end of it. no such luck. i rec'd a bill for renewal in my real name. i thought, ok. i'll renew in my real name cuz she liked the mag. so...i then get a renewal notice under my old name. ignored it. that one went to collection. i called the toll free number, got a person. explained the situation, she cancelled the 'old' name acct. and kept the "real" name account. ok, so...i now get double the mags in the mail. i havent paid anyone in 2 yrs. i dont get it. {{{sigh}}} people at those jobs are dumb.... amy

When my mom died, I sent letters to each of her credit card companies, along with a copy of the death certificate and payment for any balances, asking them to close the account. One company wrote back and said she had to close the account herself. They never did explain how they expected that to happen. :)

The misspelling is a good idea. When ever I subscribe to a new magazine I use a different spelling of my first name or initials. That way I can track who sells my name. If they use my name inappropriately I report it to the magazine with the information about the name difference.
