Maureen, At one time I was in a workshop where we were being taught some "heirloom by serger" techniques. We made a hanger cover to try the different things. It is a small project, makes a great gift and doesn't have to be perfect to try some of the various neat techniques. I ended up making a few more and combined them as a gift one year for my mother-in-law. To do, decide on a length for the cover, ours extended past the bottom of the hanger by an inch or so. Cut 2 pieces of fabric about 3' longer and 4-5 inches wider than the finished cover size. Do whatever techniques you want. Use one for each side of the cover, and use your hanger as a "pattern" to cut the cover, remembering to leave generous seam allowances. sew together with serger or French seam, leaving an opening at the top for the hanger hook. Hem bottom and finish top opening, and you are finished.
Sachet bags are also a quick project to practice on. Or throw pillows. For wearables try a camisole for yourself. (No you don't have to only use these techniques in things for little ones.)
