Please excuse the totally off-topic post, but I know a bunch of you must have been involved in school trips over the years :-)
I'm travelling to NYC and DC with 30 high school students (Y11, ages
16-18) and one colleague in the Spring. We're finding that many places are requesting chaperone ratios that we cannot meet, for example Ellis Island (1 to 10, and they are smart enough to demand chaperones be over 21), and Amtrak (1 to 6). Now, I don't dispute that these ratios make sense for younger kids, but our students will also do their own sightseeing/shopping in groups of four, and here at home one teacher will happily take the 30 students out for the day without anyone batting an eyelid.
So my question is this: Have any of you been in a similar situation? Do you have any idea if a nice email about how well-behaved and mature our students are might allow for a break in the rules?
We could probably charter a coach instead of using Amtrak, but I'd hate for us to miss out on Ellis Island.
Thanks! Hanne in DK
