OT Christmas Bloopers

My mom, my gramma, and my aunt are the "problem children" when it comes to arrival times. Now that my gramma travels with either my aunt or uncle she arrives in a more timely fashion though.

The problem is not anyone arriving late though, the problem is that if any one of them is less than a half an hour early they think they are running late! In truth my mom is the worst of the bunch. She always had us arriving at least an hour early to anything, and has not changed one smidge over the years.

I have taken to asking them to show up at least a half an hour later than I want them, and if my mom says she will be here at noon, I start looking for her at 10:30 or 11.

Howdy!

We always have pizza on Christmas Eve. This year I set up a pizza bar, make your own, serve yourself. The local bakery had this beautiful focaccia, 10" rounds, lovely bread; I brought home a dozen. All of our favorite "toppings" were prepared & lined up on the counter. The oven was kept hot, the pizza stones were in full-time use; no waiting for the delivery guy. Everyone enjoyed themselves, some stuffed themselves , there was plenty for all, w/ a nice selection of leftovers. I had made some chicken-pecan salad for Christmas Day snacking. They all decided to make a meal out of chicken on focaccia; we never did get around to the planned dinner (shrimp & veggies), just kept going back to that focaccia, chicken, pizza toppings, green salad. Fine with me. We didn't pull out the fancy dishes, didn't set the table for "company", didn't have all the extra washing up to do. Everyone wanted to sit around the Christmas tree, talking and laughing, an impromptu picnic. Fine. Worked for me! I was able to quilt while others ate (early and late-comers), and everyone was happy. ;-) The leftovers "kept" for a few more days. We're finally eating the shrimp & veggies tonight. ;-P

Happy New Year!

I must say, I've done my share of entertaining over the years. When married to husband#2 (he was not a DH), we did alot of formal entertaining: cocktail hour with hor d'vors and then 5-7 courses after that. I always hired a waiter/waitress or two and a bartender. I expected guests to arrive at least 15 minutes before cocktail hour, but the "norm" was about 10 minutes after the established time. "Fashionably late" I think is the term. Never had anyone arrive "too" late. But many times they stayed too late! Unless we had to be somewhere after dinner ie: theater, etc. It was an experience, sometimes fun, but very stressful.

Now that I am single and living simpler, paper plates and finger foods seem so much more fun and less hassle. Living with younger people makes you realize life is short, have fun and relax.

I like the new way much better.
