OT...computer stuff

How do I change the default settings on some programs? For instance, I don't want my Window Media Player to automatically play all videos that are downloaded. I can't seem to find where I need to change this. Thanks!

KJ - open Windoze Media player, go to the tools drop down menu and select Options. Choose the File Types tab. Then you can choose what kinds of files you want the Player to play. I imagine unchecking them all would give you a prompt when you open a media file, asking what program to use. Hope this helps.

I'm assuming you are using a PC and not a Mac. If you are using a Mac... nevermind! VBG

Go to Windows Explorer or the Control Panel and do the following:

Click on TOOLS --> Folder Options --> File Types

Now the tricky part -- you need to know the 3 digit file extension for the files you want to change (like MP3 or JPG....) Scroll down the list until you find it. When you select it, in the bottom half of the dialog box it will show you which application is set to open ALL files of that type (with teh same extension). You may then click Change and change it to another application to be the default application set to open ALL files of that type.

Be careful as you do this -- for if you assign an application that is not designed to open that file type -- NONE of those files will open appropriately. You can go back and do the same thing to correct it... but in the meantime you will end up with "garbage" files.

I hope that all makes sense... if not please post back.

I probably wouldn't have this problem if I had a Mac, huh? I've someone gotten a bad file (or something) that won't allow me to upgrade my iTunes or Quicktime. I had to go back to an old download to even get it back on my computer. Then when I tried to upgrade that.....it wouldn't do it. But at least I now have some edition of those two programs. I was getting a codec message when I tried to play a downloaded video in Media Player/IE. When I went to Firefox and tried to watch the movie...it worked just fine. I think my computer is starting to crack up.....or maybe I am......

Oh yes you would. Media players trying to dominate the universe happens on them too. Real Player is the worst I've come across.

I haven't found a better solution than shouting at it a lot and trying every control that might conceivably do something. If I knew how to make a wax effigy of a software corporation I'd have a great use for blunt pins.
